ASTM C627-18 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Ceramic Floor Tile Installation Systems Using Robinson Type Floor Tester

ASTM C627-18 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Ceramic Floor Tile Installation Systems Using Robinson Type Floor Tester

The ASTM C627-18 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) defines a test method for the evaluation of ceramic floor tile flooring systems using a Robinson type floor tester. This test method is designed to evaluate complete ceramic floor tile installation systems only for failure under dynamic loads, not to evaluate specific properties of ceramic tile such as wear resistance. This test method does not claim to provide meaningful results other than evaluating all-ceramic floor tile flooring systems.

ASTM C627-18 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Ceramic Floor Tile Installation Systems Using Robinson Type Floor Tester

The Robinson soil test is a commonly used form of measurement to determine the performance of a soil under several different loads. First, in 1958, during the development of a fine-tuning method for laying ceramic tiles, a test machine was designed to evaluate the performance of such a method. This testing machine was later called the Robinson ground testing machine, and the ASTM C1970 standard was published in 627.

The Robinson floor testing machine is a three-wheeled cart that rotates around a sample cross-section of a central tile floor. According to the ASTM C627 standard, the tile floor sample is constructed using a Portland cement mortar, a thin-bed application on a concrete base, or a plywood or composite foundation assembly . The test is performed according to a loading schedule with 14 different cycles. For each cycle, the schedule specifies the type of wheel to be used (soft rubber, hard rubber, or steel), the amount of weight to be placed on each wheel, and the total number of cart revolutions to be performed. After the completion of each cycle, the sample floor cross-section is visually inspected for chipped, broken, and loose tiles, and for flaked, cracked, and powdery joints. The testing method identifies each of these features and determines the degree to which each is observed before determining the failure of the sample.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services to evaluate ceramic floor tile installation systems using a Robinson-type floor testing machine within the scope of the ASTM C627-18 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
