The ASTM C151/C151M-18 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes a test method for determining the expansion of a hardened cement mortar when exposed to autoclave conditions. This test method is intended to detect autoclave expansion of hydraulic cement by performing a test on a pure cement sample. Values given in the standard in inch-pound are accepted as standard.

This standard does not purport to address the safety concerns, if any, of its use. It is the responsibility of the implementers of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
Hydraulic cement is a material used to stop water and leaks in concrete and masonry structures. It is a type of cement that is similar to mortar, sets extremely fast and hardens after mixing with water. Hydraulic cement is widely used in the construction industry to seal structures under ground and in situations where they are submerged or affected.
The autoclave expansion test defined in ASTM C151/C151M-18 standard is used to provide the potential delayed expansion index caused by the hydration of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide in hydraulic cements. The effect of hypercrystalline free magnesium oxide on cement strength and concrete durability under real service conditions is investigated.
The destructive expansion of the cement mortar is caused by excessive amounts of free lime (calcium oxide) or magnesia (magnesium oxide). Most portland cement specifications limit magnesia content and expansion. In the typical expansion test, a small sample of cement is placed in an autoclave (a high pressure steam vessel). After the autoclave is slowly brought to 2.03 Mpa, it is held at this pressure for 3 hours. The change in sample length based on the residence time in the autoclave is measured and reported as a percentage. The ASTM C 150 standard specifies a maximum autoclave expansion of 0,80 percent for all types of Portland cement (ASTM C150-00 is the standard specification for Portland cement).
Our company also provides standard testing services for autoclave expansion of hydraulic cement within the scope of ASTM C151/C151M-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
