Thermomechanical analysis method is a technique in which the deformation of the sample under non-oscillating stress is monitored against time or temperature while programming the temperature of the sample in a certain atmosphere. The force applied here can be stress, compression, tensile, bending or torsion.

During the analyses, the sample is placed in the oven and touched with a probe connected to the length detector and force generator. A thermocouple is placed next to the sample for temperature measurement. The sample temperature is changed in the furnace by applying force to the sample through the probe. Specimen deformation such as thermal expansion and softening with changing temperature is measured by the length detector. A linear variable differential transformer is used for the length detection sensor.
Various types of probes are available for thermomechanical analysis. Their choice depends on the purpose of measurement. For example,
The materials of the probes are quartz glass, alumina and metal. This is decided depending on the temperature range or the measurement purpose. If thermomechanical analysis that provides dynamic force control is performed on top of static force control, stress-stress, creep, stress relaxation and dynamic mechanical analysis measurements can be made.
Many materials undergo changes in their thermomechanical properties during heating or cooling. For example, phase changes or softening may occur in addition to thermal expansion. Thermomechanical analyzes provide here valuable information about composition, structure, production conditions or application possibilities for various materials.
The application range of thermomechanical analyzers ranges from quality control to research and development. Typical uses include plastics and elastomers, paints, composite materials, adhesives, films and fibers, ceramics, glass, metals and composite materials.
With thermomechanical analysis, dimensional changes of solids, liquids or pasty materials as a function of temperature or time under a certain mechanical force are detected.
