Edge Crush Test (ECT) and Box Crush Test (BCT)

Edge Crush Test (ECT) and Box Crush Test (BCT)

ECT (edge crush test) and BCT (box crush test) are two completely separate tests. However, they are similar to each other in some aspects. In the edge crush test, 2 x 2 cardboard samples are taken and the edge between the compression plates is crushed with a desktop machine. In the box crush test, the entire box is crushed between the compression plates. Because this test requires crushing an entire box, it generally requires a larger testing machine and larger compression plates.

Edge Crush Test (ECT) and Box Crush Test (BCT)

These tests are carried out to determine the strength of a box under pressure. The strength of the boxes produced is evaluated in this way. Edge crush test (ECT) and box crush test (BCT) results depend on different factors. Namely,

  • Making the box
  • size of the box
  • Humidity in the box and the environment
  • Handling the box before testing
  • Whether the box is printed or plain
  • Grooves in corrugated cardboard
  • Box contents

Edge crush resistance is expressed in kilonewtons per metre. There are many material testing methods used to measure the strength of boxes. Most techniques are used to evaluate the compressive and tensile strength of a smooth, single-walled corrugated or empty box based on a variety of properties.

The edge crush resistance test is primarily applied to set box standards. If the manufacturer wants to determine whether the produced box complies with industry rules and legal regulations, it has an edge crush test done. The edge crush resistance test is also performed to determine the strength of the box. It also allows the manufacturer to test the quality of the materials used in the manufacture of the boxes.

Box compression testing is a test performed to determine the strength of a cardboard box by directly measuring its stacking resistance. The strength of the box will change when transported from one place to another while stacked, and depending on weather conditions. The moisture content of a cardboard box negatively affects its stacking performance. Box compression testing provides an indication for various factors of all boxes; it is not possible to have valid absolute values, and it includes all types of factors affecting stacking capability.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer edge crushing testing (ECT) and box crushing testing services with our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
