The ASTM D2266-01 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), provides a test method for determining the anti-wear properties of greases in steel sliding applications. This test method is not intended to predict wear properties or evaluate the extreme pressure properties of grease with steel/non-steel metal combinations.

The four-ball wear test method is used to determine the relative anti-wear properties of greases under test conditions. However, the relative values may differ if the test conditions are changed. No relationship has been established between the four-ball wear test and field service. This test method cannot be used to distinguish between overpressure and non-overpressure greases.
During the test, steel balls with a diameter of about 13 mm are clamped together and coated with the lubricant to be evaluated. The diameter steel ball, called the fourth upper ball, is pressed with a force of 392 N into the space formed by the three clamped balls for three-point contact. The temperature of the lubricating grease sample is regulated at 75 degrees, and then the upper ball is rotated at 60 rpm for 1200 minutes. Lubricants are compared using the average size of the wound diameters formed in the three sub-engaged balls. Due to differences in the construction of the various machines on which the four-ball test is performed, the manufacturer's instructions should be consulted for proper machine setup and operation.
Today there are two four-ball tests that determine the tribological properties of a lubricating oil and a lubricating grease: a four-ball extreme pressure tester and a four-ball wear tester. The four-ball extreme pressure test involves determining the load-bearing properties of lubricating fluids. The four-ball wear test includes an initial assessment of the anti-wear properties of liquid lubricants at sliding contact.
The wear characteristics of lubricating oils and greases are determined using ASTM methods. Based on ASTM D2266 standard for lubricating greases and D4172 standard for lubricating oils.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services for the anti-wear properties of lubricating grease under the ASTM D2266-01 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
