ASTM C1223-19 Standard Test Method for Testing Glass Exudation from AZS Fusion Casting Refractories

The ASTM C1223-19 standard published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) defines a test method for causing a glassy phase to leak onto the surface of molten cast specimens by exposing them to temperatures corresponding to glass furnace operating temperatures. This test method includes a procedure for measuring exudate (leakage) as a percentage of the sample overrun after cooling.

AZS refractory bricks and blocks are produced from alumina powder, zircon sand and additives. The zirconium content defines the corrosion resistance. This material is most commonly used in glass melting furnaces, frit furnaces and some foundries.

The test method described in the ASTM C1223-19 standard is mainly used for the following purposes:

  • As a process control tool for the production of AZS fusion casting refractories by manufacturers
  • For use by glass producing companies in the selection of refractories and in the design of glass melting furnaces.

The results are considered to be indicative of an AZS refractory's potential to contribute to glass defect formation during the furnace manufacturing process. The test procedures and results are applied to other refractory types or applications where glass leakage is considered important, for example in the manufacture of reheat furnace skid rail brick.

The method of identifying a glass defect source, the fusion casting refractory, and the glass melting furnace using it is a commonly applied method for identifying a glass defect source. Here, a glass defect source is identified directly without the use of mathematical simulation. In this testing method, a glass melting furnace is constructed using a fusion casting refractory containing at least one tracer component from cesium monoxide, strontium oxide, barium oxide, and zinc oxide compounds as the coating furnace material. Molten glass material is formed in this furnace to produce glass products, and products with glass defects are removed and the component is analyzed to determine the location of the glass defect source in the glass melting furnace.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services for glass exudation testing from AZS fusion casting refractories under the ASTM C1223-19 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
