EN ISO 2812 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Liquids

The standard “EN ISO 2812 Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to liquids”, which is based on a European standard and later published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of a number of subsections published under the same title. Namely,

EN ISO 2812 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Liquids

  • The standard “ISO 2812-1 Part 1: Immersion in liquids other than water” describes general methods for determining the resistance of a single-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of liquids other than water or paste-like products (indirectly contained in the test liquids). These methods enable testers to determine the effects of the test liquid on the coating and, if necessary, to assess damage to the substrate. In principle, a coated test panel is exposed to the test liquid by immersion in the test liquid when performing the tests. The effects of the exposures are evaluated according to agreed criteria.

In these tests, in addition to conventional laboratory equipment, a container made of inert material is used to hold the test liquid and test panels. A heating cabinet with artificial ventilation is used to test at higher temperatures (within 40 degrees plus/minus 3 degrees). To protect against explosion or fire, products containing volatile flammable liquids should be handled with caution.

One or more test liquids are used as agreed between the parties involved. Examples of test liquids are included in the standard annex (Annex A). For the tests, a representative sample of the coating material to be tested is taken in accordance with ISO 15528. Each sample is pre-tested in accordance with ISO 1513 and prepared for further testing.

  • The standard "ISO 2812-2 Part 2: Water immersion method" describes a method for determining the water resistance of a single-layer or multi-layer coating material system by partial or complete immersion. This method allows the effects of water on the coating to be determined and, if necessary, the damage to the substrate to be assessed. When performing the tests, in principle, a coated test panel is immersed in water and the effects of immersion are assessed according to criteria previously agreed upon between the parties involved, which are often subjective.

A representative sample of the coating material to be tested is taken in accordance with ISO 15528. Each sample is pre-tested in accordance with ISO 1513 and prepared for further testing.

Unless otherwise specified or agreed, test panels shall be of polished steel conforming to ISO 1514, approximately 150 mm x 100 mm in size and 0,7 mm to 1,0 mm thick. Each test panel shall be prepared as described in ISO 1514 and then coated with the product or system being tested by the specified method. It is preferable to coat both sides and protect the edges. Agreement shall be reached as to whether the reverse side of the panel should be coated with a sufficiently durable coating or whether both sides of the panel should be coated with the coating material being tested. Each coated test panel shall be dried or baked and aged (if applicable) for the specified time under the specified conditions. The test procedure shall be carried out as soon as possible.

  • The standard “ISO 2812-3 Part 3: Method using an absorbent medium” describes a method for determining the resistance of a single-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of liquids or paste-like products using an absorbent medium. This method enables testers to determine the effects of the test substance on the coating and, if necessary, to assess damage to the substrate. In principle, when performing the tests, a coated test panel is exposed to a test substance using an absorbent medium. The effects of the exposures are assessed according to agreed criteria.

One or more test materials are used in the tests as agreed between the parties involved. Examples of test materials are included in the standard appendix (Annex A). A representative sample of the coating material to be tested is taken in accordance with ISO 15528. Each sample is pre-tested in accordance with ISO 1513 and prepared for further testing.

Unless otherwise agreed, test panels with dimensions of approximately 150 mm x 100 mm and a thickness of 0,7 mm to 1,0 mm, complying with the requirements of ISO 1514, are used. Each test panel is prepared as described in ISO 1514 and then coated using the application method agreed with the product or system being tested. Each coated test panel is dried or baked and aged (if applicable) for the specified time under the specified conditions. The dry film thickness of the coating is determined in microns using one of the non-destructive methods specified in ISO 2808.

  • The standard “ISO 2812-4 Part 4: Detection methods” describes staining methods for determining the resistance of a single layer or multilayer system of coating materials to the effects of liquids or paste-like products. These methods enable testers to determine the effects of the test substance on the coating and, if necessary, to assess damage to the substrate. In principle, when performing the tests, a coated test panel is exposed to a test substance using the staining method. The effects of the exposures are evaluated according to agreed criteria.

In the tests, one or more test substances are used as agreed between the parties involved. Examples of test substances are included in the standard annex (Annex A). A representative sample of the coating material to be tested is taken in accordance with ISO 15528. Each sample is pre-tested in accordance with ISO 1513 and prepared for further testing.

Unless otherwise agreed, test panels conforming to the requirements of ISO 150, with dimensions of approximately 100 mm x 0,7 mm and a thickness of 1,0 mm to 1514 mm, are used. Each test panel is prepared as described in ISO 1514 and then coated using the application method specified for the product or system under test. Each coated test panel is dried or baked and aged (if applicable) for the specified time under the specified conditions. The dry film thickness of the coating is determined in microns using one of the non-destructive methods specified in ISO 2808.

  • The standard “ISO 2812-5 Part 5: Temperature gradient oven method” describes a method for determining the resistance of a single-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of liquids or paste-like products using a temperature gradient oven. This method enables testers to determine the effects of the test substance on the coating and, if necessary, to assess damage to the substrate. In carrying out the tests, in principle, a test substance is applied to a test panel that has been coated according to a specified procedure. The test panel is placed in a gradient oven. The effects of the exposures are assessed according to agreed criteria.

Unless otherwise agreed, steel test panels of approximately 560 mm x 100 mm dimensions and 0,7 mm to 1,0 mm thickness shall be used. Each test panel shall be prepared as described in ISO 1514 and then coated by the application method specified for the product or system under test. Each coated test panel shall be dried or baked and aged (if applicable) for the specified time under the specified conditions. The dry film thickness of the coating shall be determined in microns using one of the non-destructive methods specified in ISO 2808.

In short, the purpose of the EN ISO 2812 standard is to specify methods for determining the resistance of coatings to the effects of liquids, including water, chemicals and other test liquids. These standards help to assess how well a paint, varnish or similar coating resists physical or chemical degradation when exposed to specific substances. These tests are important in industries such as automotive, construction and marine to ensure the durability and performance of surface coatings.
