D14 1055 Organic Materials and Coatings - Abrasion Wear

D14 1055 Organic Materials and Coatings - Abrasion Wear

The D14 1055 standard, developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, Europe's second largest automobile manufacturer, defines a test method for determining the abrasion resistance of organic materials and coatings used in the automotive industry. The purpose of this test method is to evaluate or compare the resistance of organic materials such as textiles, lining leather and similar organic materials used in interior parts of vehicles and organic coatings such as paint or plastic to abrasion over time by friction. The principle of this standard is based on the realization of friction abrasion of a reference fabric on the part to be tested and, after a certain period of time, examining the condition of the exposed surface relative to an unworn area of the same part.

Organic coatings act as a protective barrier against corrosion and oxidation. Such coatings are durable coatings applied to a substrate for its decorative or specific technical properties. The properties of organic coatings primarily depend on their chemically inert properties and impermeability. There are several types of organic coatings for industrial purposes, including primers, adhesives and topcoats (varnishes and paints). These coatings are also widely used in the automotive industry.

Organic coatings are applied by brushes, sprays, rollers, dips or electrostatic means. The coating cures or dries through evaporation or loss of solvent, polymerization and oxidation.

In short, organic coatings prevent corrosion between the underlying metal and the corrosive environment. They preserve the material's durability and provide resistance to weathering, moisture, friction, chemicals, toughness, and aesthetic appearance. The efficiency of an organic coating depends on the mechanical properties of the coating system, the type and concentration of suspended inhibitors, the pretreatment of the metal surface, the adhesion of the coating to the underlying metal substrate, and other additives. The coating formulation generally contains solvent, resin (binder), pigment, filler, and additives. When applied to the underlying metal, they provide continuous, homogeneous strength that prevents cracking and structural degradation during stress, water permeability, and physical aging.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services to determine the frictional wear of organic materials and coatings within the scope of D14 1055 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
