ASTM D1742-20 Standard Test Method for Separation of Oil from Lubricating Grease During Storage

ASTM D1742-20 Standard Test Method for Separation of Oil from Lubricating Grease During Storage

The ASTM D1742-20 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), introduces a test method for determining the tendency of a lubricating grease to separate from oil during storage in both normally filled and partially filled containers. This test method is not considered suitable for greases softer than NLGI No. 1 grade.

When degreasing is made from a lubricating grease, the consistency of the remaining composition increases. This affects the product's ability to function as designed. The results of this test were found to be directly related to the oil separation that occurs in 16 kg grease buckets during storage. This test method is not intended to predict oil separation tendencies of grease under dynamic conditions.

Static leakage refers to the separation of oil from grease during storage. Dynamic leakage (overflow) is typically separation caused by the movement of grease during use. Some air release is necessary for grease to function properly, but excessive release compromises the grease's effectiveness and lifespan. High temperatures, contamination, vibration, centrifugal forces, and operating conditions are factors that increase dynamic leakage.

One of the most frequently asked questions today is oil separation. A thin film of oil can be seen on top of the grease when the grease buckets are opened. Separation of some oils is not a problem and usually occurs in lubricants. Compared to the mass of grease in the container, separation of the oil is generally insignificant and if the oil is safely mixed back into the bulk of the grease, it will not functionally affect the grease. In general, oil separation occurs when oil is exposed to heat for a long time, when the bucket is stored in a hot storage environment, when the grease surface is uneven, or when the bucket is exposed to pressure and altitude changes.

Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used when mixing oil back into grease. In addition, it is necessary to clean all containers with solvent solution before mixing to avoid contamination.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the separation of oil from lubricating grease during storage within the scope of ASTM D1742-20 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
