EN 1324 Tile Adhesives - Determination of Shear Adhesion Strength of Dispersion Adhesives

The European standard "EN 1324 Tile adhesives - Determination of shear adhesion strength of dispersion adhesives" describes a test method for determining the shear adhesion strength of dispersion ceramic tile adhesives. This test method applies to all dispersion ceramic tile adhesives for internal tile installations on walls and floors. This standard does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles. Ceramic tile adhesives can also be used for other types of tiles, such as natural and agglomerated stone, if they do not adversely affect the stone.

For the tests, at least 15605 kg of sample should be taken from the adhesive in accordance with the standards “ISO 1067 Adhesives - Sampling” and “EN 2 Adhesives - Examination and preparation of samples for testing”.

When performing the tests, standard conditions must be provided, for example, a temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and a relative humidity of 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent, and the air speed in the work area must be less than 0,2 m/s.

Before testing, all test materials (adhesives etc.) are conditioned for at least 24 hours under standard conditions. The adhesive to be tested must be within its shelf life if specified. Ceramic tiles should be checked before conditioning to ensure they are new, clean and dry.

The tiles used for this test method must have the following properties:

  • Type P2 must comply with EN 14411 standard, group BIII
  • Must have a water absorption property of 15 percent plus/minus 3 percent by mass
  • It should have a thickness between 7 mm and 10 mm
  • Must have a profile back pattern thinner than 0,25 mm
  • Must have surface dimensions of 108 mm plus/minus 1 mm × 108 mm plus/minus 1 mm and glazed porous bodies

The equipment used in these tests should include:

  • The device shall: Have a smooth, non-absorbent frame as shown in the figure in the Standard, be manufactured from PTFE or similar material with non-stick properties, have a hole diameter of 14,3 mm plus/minus 0,1 mm, have an actual coverage of 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent, and be 1,5 plus/minus 0,1 mm thick.
  • Spacer bars: 0,8 mm in diameter, approximately 40 mm long.
  • Weight: It should be a weight that can apply a force of 100 N plus/minus 100 N to a cross-sectional area of less than 70 mm × 0,15 mm.
  • Loading machine: It should be a machine with suitable capacity and sensitivity for the test and with a variable test speed. The machine should be able to apply the load to the tile by means of a suitable apparatus.
  • Shear test apparatus: There should be a suitable apparatus used to convert the pressure or tensile load applied by the testing machine into shear force. Examples of suitable apparatus are given in the figures given in the standard.
  • Air circulation oven: It should be an air circulation oven that can control the temperature up to plus/minus 3 degrees.

Dispersion adhesives are water-based liquid adhesives that solidify after the water evaporates. Dispersion adhesives include, for example, all-white adhesives. They are used for bonding softwoods and hardwoods, HPL surface face bonding, bonding of board blanks, block bonding and carcass and assembly applications. The addition of hardeners increases the adhesive properties of white adhesives.

Shear stress measures the ability of an adhesive to withstand shear stress vertically or horizontally. During a torsion test, an increasing shear load is applied until the adhesive fails or tears.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 1324 Tile adhesives - Determination of shear adhesion strength of dispersion adhesives” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
