The standard "DIN 17440 Technical delivery conditions for stainless steel sheet, hot-rolled strip and bars, drawn wire and forgings for pressure purposes" developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) describes the technical delivery conditions for stainless steel hot-rolled strip, cold- or hot-rolled plate and hot-rolled bars for pressure purposes, as well as stainless steel drawn wire and connecting elements. Standards covering other stainless steel products are included in the annex of this standard (Annex C).

In addition to the specifications of this standard, the general technical delivery conditions for steel and iron products defined in the standard “DIN EN 10021 General technical delivery conditions for steel products” apply unless otherwise stated.
This standard does not cover components produced by low-temperature processing (product forms listed in this standard that have different quality characteristics than those previously listed).
Stainless steels are steels that are resistant to corrosion and staining. For the purposes of this standard, stainless steels contain at least 10,5 percent chromium and more than 1,2 percent carbon.
Heat treatment types are defined in the standard “DIN EN 10052 Glossary of heat treatment terms for ferrous products”.
Product forms are defined in the standard “DIN EN 10079 Definition of steel products”.
Dimensions and dimensional tolerances must be agreed at the time of ordering, if possible with reference to the dimensional standards listed in the standard appendix (Annex A).
The density values in the table provided in the standard are used to calculate the mass and mass tolerances of the products. If mass tolerances are not specified in the dimensional standards listed in the standard appendix (Annex A), they must be specified at the time of ordering.
The definition of a stainless steel in accordance with this standard includes the following information:
Relevant dimensional standards must be followed for the definition of product forms.
Orders must contain all information necessary to clearly identify the product or products in question, as well as information on the condition and details or tests. The descriptions specified in this standard must be supplemented where necessary (for example, by agreeing on any mandatory or optional requirements).
For steels included in this standard, the steel making process shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer unless a specific process is agreed upon at the time of ordering. If so, the purchaser shall be informed of the steel making process used. The forming process shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer unless otherwise agreed upon at the time of ordering.
Products are supplied in the condition agreed at the time of order, with reference to the processing conditions contained in the tables given in the standard and the forming, heat treatment and surface preparation conditions listed.
The requirements for the chemical composition of the steels determined in the cost analysis are included in the table given in the standard.
If the buyer or seller's representative agrees, minor deviations are permitted as long as the mechanical properties, weldability and corrosion resistance of the steel in question meet the equipment specified in this standard. The results of the product analysis may deviate from the limit values given in the table (for casting analysis) by the amounts specified in the table.
The tables indicate which ferritic and austenitic steels are resistant to intergranular corrosion when processed in accordance with DIN 50914. The corrosion resistance of stainless steels cannot always be determined clearly by laboratory tests. Therefore, practical experience with these types of steels must be used.
The mechanical properties of the products at ambient temperature after heating are the values specified in the tables.
Among the numerous testing, measuring, analyzing and evaluating studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “DIN 17440 Technical delivery conditions for stainless steel sheet, hot rolled strip and bars, drawn wire and forgings for pressure purposes” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
