UL 723 Testing of Surface Combustion Properties of Building Materials

UL 723 Testing of Surface Combustion Properties of Building Materials

The UL 723 standard, regulated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), is a standard that measures the combustion properties or fire resistance of building materials exposed to flames. The results from this test are used by authorities in the acceptance of interior finishing materials for wall and ceiling applications in commercial areas. The scope of testing includes exposing the test samples to a test fire and measuring both the flame spread over the surface of the sample and the smoke density developed.

UL 723 Testing of Surface Combustion Properties of Building Materials

The flammability test method described in the UL 723 standard is very similar to the test method defined in the ASTM E84 standard, as both determine the surface combustion properties by measuring flame spread and smoke density.

The fire test-response method for the comparative surface burning behavior of building materials is defined in the ASTM E84-01 Standard test method standard for the surface burning properties of building materials, published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM). This test method is applied to exposed surfaces such as walls and ceilings. The purpose of this test method is to determine the relative combustion behavior of the material by observing the flame propagating throughout the sample. Flame spread and smoke development index are reported as a result of the test, but there is not necessarily a correlation between these two measurements.

Today there are some differences between well-known fire behavior safety standards such as UL 723, ASTM E84-01 and NFPA.

The purpose of the test described in the UL 723 standard is to determine comparative combustion characteristics by evaluating the flame spread on the surface of the material being tested and the density of the smoke produced when exposed to a test fire, thus establishing a baseline for the surface. This test method aims to record performance over the exposure period. However, it is not intended to determine suitability for use after exposure to the test. For procedures to determine the performance of building structures and materials under fire exposure conditions when incorporated into a test structure and exposed to a standard controlled fire, reference is made to the UL 263 Fire Testing of Building Construction and Materials standard.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for the surface combustion properties of building materials, within the framework of UL 723 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
