JIS K 6262 Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Determination of Compression Set at Ambient, High or Low Temperatures

The standard “JIS K 6262 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of compression set at ambient, high or low temperatures” developed by the Japanese Industrial Standards organization (JIS) describes methods for determining the compression set of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers at ambient, high or low temperatures.

JIS K 6262 Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic - Determination of Compression Set at Ambient, High or Low Temperatures

Essentially, this standard is based on the following two standards developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO):

  • ISO 815-1 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of compression set - Part 1: At ambient or elevated temperatures
  • ISO 815-2 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of compression set - Part 2: At low temperatures

The ISO 815-standard describes methods for determining the compression set properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers at ambient or elevated temperatures (depending on the way the test piece is released at the end of the test). These methods are intended to measure the ability of rubbers with a hardness in the range of 10 IRHD to 95 IRHD to retain their elastic properties at specified temperatures after prolonged compression at constant strain (normally 25 percent) in one of the alternative sets of conditions described. For rubbers with a nominal hardness of 80 IRHD and above, a lower compression strain is used (80 percent for nominal hardnesses of 89 IRHD to 15 IRHD and 90 percent for nominal hardnesses of 95 IRHD to 10 IRHD).

In performing the tests, a test piece of known thickness is compressed to a defined stress at standard laboratory temperature and then held constant for a specified time at the standard laboratory temperature or at a constant elevated temperature. The compression is released and the test piece is allowed to recover for a specified time at the standard laboratory temperature or at an elevated temperature, then the thickness of the test piece is measured again.

The ISO 815 standard describes two methods for determining the compression set properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers at low temperatures. Method 1 is derived from the methodology used in the ISO 815-1 standard. Method 2 uses a specific test device that allows the thickness of the test piece to be measured and recorded during recovery. Due to the load applied during recovery in Method 2, no correlation can be established between the results given by both methods.

In applying Method 1, a test piece of known thickness is compressed to a defined strain at standard laboratory temperature and then held constant for a specified time at a constant low temperature. The compression is completely released and the test piece is allowed to recover freely at the same constant low temperature, after which the thickness of the test piece is measured again.

In applying Method 2, a test piece of known thickness is compressed to a defined strain at standard laboratory temperature and then held constant for a specified time at a constant low temperature. The compression is released and the test piece is allowed to recover at this temperature under a given pressure according to the ISO 23529 standard for thickness measurement. The thickness is measured at intervals after strain release (so that an assessment of the compression set properties can be obtained by plotting the strain against time at low temperature) or at a specified time after strain release.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “JIS K 6262 Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of compression set at ambient, high or low temperatures” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
