ASTM F104-11 Standard Classification System for Nonmetallic Gasket Materials

ASTM F104-11 Standard Classification System for Nonmetallic Gasket Materials

The classification system described in the “ASTM F104-11 Standard classification system for non-metallic gasket materials” developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) provides a means to determine or describe the relevant properties of commercial non-metallic gasket materials.

ASTM F104-11 Standard Classification System for Nonmetallic Gasket Materials

Materials consisting of the combination of asbestos, cork, cellulose and other organic or inorganic materials with various binders or impregnating substances are within the scope of this standard. Materials normally classified as rubber compounds are outside the scope of this standard because they fall within the scope of classification described in the “ASTM D2000-12 Standard classification system for rubber products in automotive applications” standard. Additionally, gasket coatings are excluded as their details are intended to be provided in engineering drawings or separate specifications. Covering materials for laminate composite gasket materials are included in the ASTM F104-11 classification system. Assembled laminate composite gasket materials are within the scope of the "ASTM F868-17 Standard classification for laminated composite gasket materials" standard.

The use of the classification system as a basis for material selection is limited because not all properties that contribute to gasket performance are included.

The ASTM F104-11 classification system is intended to promote uniformity in the reporting of properties for the following reasons:

  • Providing a common language for communication between suppliers and consumers
  • To guide engineers and designers on commonly used testing methods for commercially available materials
  • Be versatile enough to cover new materials and testing methods being introduced

This system is based on the principle that non-metallic gasket materials can be described in terms of certain physical and mechanical properties. This allows the user or manufacturer to characterize a non-metallic seal based on properties important for the application.

It is based on the principle that non-metallic gasket materials should be described in terms of specific physical and mechanical properties to the extent possible and that such descriptions can be formulated using one or more standard expressions based on an infinite number of standard tests. Therefore, by choosing different expression combinations, gasket material users can specify different combinations of desired properties in various parts. Suppliers can likewise communicate the features available in their products.

In identifying or describing gasket materials, each line information includes the number of that system followed by the letter “F” and six numbers, for example ASTM F104 (F125400). Six digits are always required because each digit of the description represents a feature. The number "0" is used when no feature is desired to be explained. The number “9” is used when the description of any feature or its associated test is indicated by some appendix to this classification system, such as notes on engineering drawings.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the "ASTM F104-11 Standard classification system for non-metallic gasket materials" standard, with a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
