EN 14692 Flexible Sheets for Waterproofing - Waterproofing of Concrete Bridge Decks and Other Concrete Surfaces Passable by Vehicles - Determination of the Resistance of the Asphalt Layer against Compression
In the European standard "EN 14692 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Waterproofing of concrete bridge decks and other concrete surfaces through which vehicles can pass - Determination of the resistance of the asphalt layer to compression", a test method for evaluating the resistance of the bitumen layer to the compression of the asphalt layer is described.

For the purposes of this document, resistance to compression refers to the ability of the waterproofing system to withstand compression of the asphalt concrete pavement without damaging it.
In principle, this test involves the compression of a given asphalt layer on a waterproofing slab laid on a base sample. This is accomplished in two alternative ways:
- Method 1: The asphalt layer is laid directly on the sheet glued to the base sample
- Method 2: A debonding interface is laid between the base sample and the slab and between the slab and the asphalt layer
After compaction of the test sample, the waterproofing board is taken back to observe its condition and any perforations. According to the observation results, the waterproofness of the recycled waterproofing membrane is checked.
The main devices and materials used in these tests include:
- A compression equipment as specified in the EN 13375 standard
- Field gas lamp, brush and similar standard equipment and materials
- An oven with air circulation (no fresh feed) that can maintain a temperature of 100 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees
Test samples are taken in accordance with EN 13416 standard. In general, test samples are prepared in two ways:
- Method 1 Test sample with a sheet glued to the basic sample: The sample is prepared in accordance with the EN 13375 standard. The size of the test sample is 600 mm × 400 mm.
- Method 2 Test sample with a layer not glued to the base sample: To prevent the asphalt layer from sticking, a separator interface is placed between the base sample and the waterproofing board and on the upper surface of the waterproofing. One non-woven glass fiber sheet of 70 plus/minus 5 g/m2 is used for the interface between the base sample and the waterproofing board. Two non-woven glass fiber sheets of 70 plus/minus 5 g/m2 are used for the interface between the waterproofing board and the asphalt layer mixture. The size of the test sample is 600 mm × 400 mm.
- Asphalt layer, compression and test samples: The asphalt layer mixture is laid and compacted in accordance with EN 13375 standard.
- Method 1 Test sample with sheet glued to the base sample: In the case of sheet glued to the base sample, the test sample prepared as described above is cut with a wet saw and divided into four equal parts.
- Method 2 Test sample with layer not bonded to base sample: In the case of test samples with separation interfaces, the asphalt layer is allowed to cool and the layer is removed for visual inspection and testing.
While the test is being applied,
- Method 1 Test specimen with sheet glued to the base specimen: The cross-section of the test specimen pieces is visually inspected to check whether any binder has leaked into the sheet/asphalt layer interface and from the sheet into the asphalt layer. Two pieces of the test sample are heated in an oven at 100 plus/minus 5 degrees for 120 plus/minus 5 minutes. In order to examine the interface, the plate is manually separated from the base sample and the asphalt layer, being careful not to damage the asphalt layer. The condition of the layer removed from a portion of the test sample is checked and held up to light to detect any holes caused by compaction of the asphalt layer. For bitumen sheets, the binder is removed from the reinforcement by extraction. The reinforcement is dried in an oven at 100 plus/minus 5 degrees for approximately 30 minutes and held to light to detect any perforation. In case of perforation, the remaining two parts of the test sample are tested for waterproofing of the waterproofing complex according to the test method described in the annex to the standard.
- Method 2 Test sample with a layer not glued to the base sample: The waterproofing board is separated and its condition is visually inspected. If visual inspection reveals holes in the waterproofing board, there is no need to perform a water tightness test. If visual inspection does not reveal any holes, the waterproofing board is tested for waterproofing for 100 hours at a pressure of 24 kPa.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, has established "EN 14692 Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Waterproofing of concrete bridge decks and other concrete surfaces that vehicles can pass through - It also provides testing services defined in the standard "Determination of the resistance of the asphalt layer against compression".
