ASTM F1387-19 Standard Specification for Performance of Mechanically Attached Fasteners

ASTM F1387-19 Standard Specification for Performance of Mechanically Attached Fasteners

The ASTM F1387-19 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes the performance characteristics required for mechanically fitted fittings for use in piping and piping systems. These fittings are connected directly to the pipe or tube with a gasket by mechanical deformation of the pipe or tube or fitting or a combination thereof. The gasket can be formed by mechanical deformation or independently. When the defined tests are successfully completed, the technical part of the qualification process is completed.

ASTM F1387-19 Standard Specification for Performance of Mechanically Attached Fasteners

This standard contains additional requirements for use when additional testing or inspection is requested (Annex A1). These tests are not intended for use in the evaluation of products without mechanical fasteners.

Mechanically attached fittings enumerated in ASTM F1387-19 are classified according to the following design types:

  • Type I Radially forged mechanical fittings (permanent)
  • Type II Enlarged mechanical fittings (detachable)
  • Type III Flameless (bite type) mechanical fittings (detachable)
  • Type IV Handle type mechanical fittings (detachable)
  • Type V Shape memory alloy mechanical fittings (permanent)
  • Type VI Axally forged mechanical fittings (permanent)

In addition, mechanical fittings must be of the following material quality or more:

  • Class A: Carbon steel
  • Class B: Stainless steel
  • Class C: Nickel-copper
  • Class D: Copper-nickel
  • E class: Brass
  • F grade: Nickel titanium

Mechanical fittings are further divided into ten classes according to their pressure rating. The standard qualification tests that mechanical fasteners must perform satisfactorily are:

  • Pneumatic endurance test
  • Hydrostatic endurance test
  • Impact test
  • Bending fatigue test
  • Tensile test
  • Hydrostatic burst test
  • Repeated assembly test
  • Rotary bending test
  • Mercury nitrate test

If these tests are successfully completed, the technical part of the qualification is completed.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the performance of mechanically added fasteners within the scope of ASTM F1387-19 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
