EN 1504 Products and Systems for the Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures - Definitions, Requirements, Quality Control and Evaluation of Conformity

In the EN 1504 standard, which is a European standard, definitions, requirements, quality control and principles for evaluation of conformity are regulated for products and systems used for the protection and repair of concrete structures.

EN 1504 Products and Systems for the Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures - Definitions, Requirements, Quality Control and Evaluation of Conformity

Essentially, the EN 1504 standard consists of the following subsections under the main heading "Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Definitions, requirements, quality control and assessment of conformity":

  • EN 1504-1 Part 1: Definitions
  • EN 1504-2 Part 2: Surface protection systems for concrete
  • EN 1504-3 Part 3: Structural and non-structural repair
  • EN 1504-4 Part 4: Structural bonding
  • EN 1504-5 Part 5: Concrete injection
  • EN 1504-6 Part 6: Anchoring of rebar
  • EN 1504-7 Part 7: Reinforcing corrosion protection
  • EN 1504-8 Part 8: Evaluation and verification of quality control and constancy of performance (AVCP)
  • EN 1504-9 Part 9: General principles for the use of products and systems
  • EN 1504-10 Part 10: Field application of products and systems and quality control of works

The EN 1504-1 standard defines terms related to repair products and systems for use in the maintenance and protection, restoration and reinforcement of concrete structures.

EN 1504-2 standard describes the products and systems used for surface protection of concrete, including new concrete and maintenance and repair work, evaluating their performance, safety and suitability, including durability aspects, and requirements for increasing the durability of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Surface protection methods covered by this standard include: hydrophobic impregnation, impregnation and coating. Floor systems in buildings that are not intended to preserve or restore the integrity of a concrete structure are described in EN 13813 standard.

The EN 1504-3 standard describes the requirements for the identification, performance and safety, including durability, of products and systems used for the structural and non-structural repair of concrete structures. This standard also covers repair mortars and concretes used in conjunction with other products and systems to restore or replace defective concrete and protect reinforcement necessary to extend the service life of a deteriorating concrete structure.

The EN 1504-4 standard describes the requirements for performance and safety, including durability, for the identification of structural fastening products and systems used for structural bonding of reinforcement materials to an existing concrete structure. The scope of this standard includes:

  • Adhering to the surface of a concrete structure for reinforcement purposes, including laminating outer plates of steel or other suitable materials.
  • Bonding of hardened concrete to hardened concrete.
  • Pouring fresh concrete into hardened concrete using an adhesive bonded joint where it forms part of the structure and must act as a composite.

The EN 1504-5 standard describes the requirements and conformity criteria for the definition, performance and safety of injection products used for the repair and protection of concrete structures used for:

  • Force-conducting filler for filling cracks and voids in concrete
  • Ductile filling of cracks and voids in concrete
  • Filling cracks and voids in concrete by swelling

The EN 1504-6 standard describes the requirements for the performance and safety, including durability, of the products and systems used in the anchoring of reinforcing steel (reinforcing iron) used for structural reinforcement to ensure the continuity of reinforced concrete structures. In this standard, it is assumed that the appropriate structural evaluation of structural members undergoing repair is made by qualified engineers and that the design as well as the selection of products and systems used is based on this evaluation.

The EN 1504-7 standard describes the requirements for the performance, including the durability aspects, of products and systems for active and barrier coatings for the protection of existing uncoated steel reinforcement and embedded steel in concrete structures under repair. This standard does not cover products for corrosion protection of prestressed steels and stainless steels.

EN 1504-8 standard defines procedures for sampling, quality control, assessment and verification of performance stability, including marking and labeling of products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete according to EN 1504-2 to EN 1504-7 standards.

The EN 1504-9 standard describes the basic aspects of the protection and repair of reinforced concrete and unreinforced concrete structures, e.g. pavements, runways, floor slabs and prestressed structures, made using the products and systems specified in other parts of this standard. The scope of this standard includes:

  • The need for inspection, testing and evaluation before and after repair
  • Prevention of defects in concrete structures and their repair
  • Repair of defects caused by inadequate design, specification or construction, or the use of unsuitable building materials
  • Providing the necessary structural capacity
  • Waterproofing as an integral part of protection and repair

The EN 1504-10 standard describes the following requirements:

  • Surface condition before and during application of systems and products
  • Storage of systems and products
  • Structural stability during preparation, protection and repair
  • Protection and repair methods
  • Quality control for the execution of the work
  • maintenance of the structure
