The IPC-9202 standard, published by the Printed Circuits Institute (IPC), a trade association established to standardize the assembly and manufacturing requirements of electronic equipment and assemblies, describes a test protocol that detects changes in surface insulation resistance in a representative sample of a printed circuit assembly. With this test method, the amount of harmful effects caused by solder flux or other process residues that remain on the outer surfaces after soldering and cause undesirable electrochemical reactions that greatly affect reliability is determined.

This test method uses test tools intended to represent electronic circuits in production and is a test that provides both quantitative and qualitative data. This test is used for process competence that demonstrates that a proposed manufacturing process or process change can produce equipment with acceptable cleaning-related end-product performance. Changes may include any assembly process steps or a change in printed carton supplier, solder mask or metallization, solder material supplier, protective coating.
In fact, there is no single test method that can guarantee acceptable electrochemical performance for all products, applications, and service environments. While there are several methods used to determine materials and process compatibility, this test protocol is used to ensure electrochemical compatibility. Test tools should be prepared at the manufacturer's location, using production processes and equipment whenever possible. Processed test tools must be kept free of any contamination while being transported to the test site. Tests of prepared instruments should be performed by the user or in an appropriate independent laboratory.
The test method defined in the IPC-9202 standard is also used for process characterizations, including the development of new processes or improvements to an existing process. Briefly, this standard specifies variations in surface insulation resistance in a representative sample of a printed circuit assembly.
Our organization also provides material and process characterization / proficiency testing services for the evaluation of electrochemical performance within the scope of the IPC-9202 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
