The D42 1235 standard, developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, Europe's second-largest car manufacturer, defines a test method (drop weight method) for determining the impact resistance of rubber and plastic parts used in the automotive industry. The purpose of this test method is to describe the operating conditions used to evaluate the impact behavior of rubber or plastic-based materials. Rubber and plastic parts include rubber or plastic-coated textiles, floor coverings and trims, soundproofing products, and similar materials.

The principle of this test method is based on the release of a steel moving body of fixed shape and mass and known height, with a part fixed and stabilized to the selected test temperature in conditions representative of the installation in the vehicle. After the test, the appearance of the part is observed.
The test conditions, i.e. mass and shape of the moving object, drop height and temperature) are usually defined in normative documents. Their domains are also described in normative documents. In some special cases, tests are performed on flanged parts or supported on a suitable bracket.
Impact strength (or impact toughness) is the amount of energy a material can withstand when a load is suddenly applied to it. It is also defined as the force threshold per unit area before the material breaks. Some of the most common parameters include tensile strength, yield strength, and creep limit. These material strength properties include the gradual application of force until the material breaks or deforms.
A few factors that affect impact strength are:
Meanwhile, impact resistance is inversely proportional to the crystallinity and void content of the material, and a higher molecular weight increases the impact resistance of the material.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides impact resistance (falling weight method) testing services of rubber and plastic parts, within the scope of the D42 1235 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
