ISO 15360 Recycled Pulps - Estimation of Adhesives and Plastics

ISO 15360 Recycled Pulps - Estimation of Adhesives and Plastics

The ISO 15360 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of the following subsections under the main heading of "Recycled pulps - Estimation of adhesives and plastics":

ISO 15360 Recycled Pulps - Estimation of Adhesives and Plastics

  • ISO 15360-1 Part 1: Visual method
  • ISO 15360-2 Part 2: Image analysis method
  • ISO/AWI 15360-3 Part 3: Determination by applying near infrared measurement

The production of pulp from deinked recycled fibers and brown or mixed waste grades is increasing around the world. Most of the recycled papers used in the manufacture of recycled pulp contain adhesives, latex and other materials that are either sticky in nature or can become sticky under the appropriate conditions of temperature, pH, and pressure. Residual particles of such materials cause problems when the pulp is subsequently used in paper production. In addition, recycled pulp feedstock is sometimes obtained from plastic coated material, and the presence of plastics in the finished pulp is particularly problematic in the production of coated papers. Also, the plastics found in the recycled paper can come from a mix that is not properly separated.

International standards have been developed for the determination of visible dirt and chips in pulp and are applied to deinked pulp. However, adhesives and plastics are often dough-like in color and difficult to detect by visual inspection, even if they are large. Therefore, it is necessary to use different techniques.

The ISO 15360-1 standard describes a test method for predicting adhesives and plastics in a wide variety of pulps, including all recycled grades. This standard is not intended for the estimation of visible dirt and debris within the ISO 5350 series of standards or visible contrasts in recycled pulps within the ISO 15319 standard. The test method described in this standard only captures adhesives and plastics left on the screen at a given slit size. However, this is probably not the total amount of glue and plastic actually present in a given dough sample.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The term adhesives refers to a diverse group of materials that are held on a laboratory screen with a specified slit opening (100 µm or 150 µm) and adhere to objects they touch. Adhesives can bond objects at ambient temperature or acquire adhesive properties when exposed to high temperature, high pressure, or pH value change. The main types of adhesives are: products made from residues of materials such as inks, tars, hot melts, waxes and polyvalent metal ion soaps or different types of pressure sensitive adhesives. An adhesive particle may be a composite of adhesive material with non-adhesive plastic parts and cellulose fibers.
  • Plastics refer to non-adhesive polymers that are retained in the laboratory screen of a given slit opening, but excluding cellulosic materials. The main types of plastics are: polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, UV-curable coatings, and polymeric materials derived from sources such as polystyrene.
  • Screen refers to the piece of laboratory screening equipment that separates adhesives and plastics from cellulose fiber.

The ISO 15360-2 standard describes a test method for estimating adhesives and plastics in all grades of recycled pulp . It applies the principles for separating adhesives and plastics described in the first part. The visualization and counting techniques described in the first part are replaced here with image analysis. This standard allows the use of different laboratory screening devices as well as screens of different sizes when applying the specified method. Due to the wide variety of adhesives and plastics found in recycled pulps and the various screening devices used for their measurement, it is not practical to more closely define the equipment or screen sizes to be used. This test method identifies only those adhesives and plastics that remain on the screen at a specific slit size under temperature and pressure conditions.

The ISO/AWI 15360-3 standard is still under development. This standard defines a test method for the determination of adhesives and non-adhesive polymeric contaminants from a hand sheet or a sheet of paper applying near infrared measurement. This standard applies to recycled pulp and paper. The sampling of pulp and paper and the preparation of hand sheets are not covered by this standard. The measurement approach described in this standard differs from established test methods in that it is determined by applying measurements of the amount and chemical composition of polymeric substances. The content of these substances, which are typical components of adhesives, has been determined as adhesive.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services for the determination of adhesives and plastics, which are recycled pulps, within the scope of ISO 15360 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
