The ISO 1518 standard, published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of the following two subsections under the main title "Paints and varnishes - Determination of scratch resistance":
The ISO 1518-1 standard defines a test method for determining the scratch resistance of a single coating or multi-layer paint, varnish or related product under certain conditions with a scratch pen loaded with a specific load. Pen penetration is to the substrate except in the case of a multi-layer system, in which case the stylus can penetrate either the substrate or an intermediate layer.
The specified method is performed as a pass/fail test by testing with a single specified load applied to the stylus to assess compliance with a particular specification. Or this method is performed as an evaluation test by applying increasing loads to the pen to determine the minimum load penetrating the coating.
The ISO 1518-2 standard, on the other hand, defines a test method for determining the scratch resistance of a single coating or top layer of a multi-layer system of a paint, varnish or related product using a pointed stylus that is loaded with an ever-increasing load. This test method is very useful in comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings. It is considered very useful in providing relative ratings for a range of coated panels that exhibit significant differences in scratch resistance.
