Weather-O-Meter (WOM) Accelerated Wear Test

Weather-O-Meter (WOM) Accelerated Wear Test

Accelerated wear chambers are used to reproduce wear damage caused by sunlight, temperature, humidity and water spray. These test chambers are used in textiles, paints, leather, plastics, paints, coatings, automotive interior parts, electrotechnical products, colored building materials. In addition to wear tests, these chambers are also used for tests such as color fastness tests, aging tests, hardening tests, softening tests and cracking tests.

Weather-O-Meter (WOM) Accelerated Wear Test

Accelerated weathering is a laboratory technique used to reproduce in the short term the damage caused by sunlight and moisture in materials exposed outdoors for long periods (months or years). With this technique, comparative durability data can be obtained for a wide variety of materials, such as coatings, adhesives, polymers, metals, wood, textiles and building materials. Typical types of damage include: discoloration, loss of gloss, chalking, cracking, clouding, blistering, brittleness, loss of strength and oxidation.

To simulate outdoor wear, the accelerated wear tester exposes materials to alternating cycles of UV light and humidity at controlled, elevated temperatures. It uses special fluorescent UV lamps to simulate the effects of sunlight and the effects of dew combined with condensing moisture.

The test devices used generally use lamps that simulate sunlight in the critical short wavelength region from 365 nm to the solar cut-off of 295 nm. The test chamber's condensation system realistically simulates dew and accelerates its effect using high temperatures. These test devices operate to a wide range of international, national and industry specifications, ensuring reliability and repeatability of test programs.

Such devices play an important role in many research projects. Typical applications of the accelerated weathering tester include evaluating the weatherability of materials and products such as: building paints, roofing materials, facility materials, protective paint systems for offshore and related structures, automotive materials, and adhesives and sealants.

Weather-O-Meters are accelerated weathering testers used for this purpose. These devices are used to perform durability testing of paints, plastics, fabrics and similar materials. This is an internationally recognized equipment for assessing the weatherability of different types of materials. It is a self-contained precision equipment used in laboratories to determine the effects of weather conditions. This equipment has built-in programming facility that allows the operator to select the desired test parameters of Light, darkness, water spray, temperature and humidity conditions according to different specifications or customer requirements.

Weather-O-Meters are generally equipment that complies with ISO 4982 Plastics - Methods of exposure to laboratory light sources. This standard specifies requirements for the selection and operation of exposure methods. This standard also defines general performance requirements for devices used to expose plastics to laboratory light sources. The information on performance requirements is intended for manufacturers of artificially accelerated weathering or artificially accelerated exposure devices. In this standard, the term light source means a radiation source emitting UV radiation, visible radiation, infrared radiation or any combination of these types of radiation. This standard also provides information on the interpretation of data obtained from artificially accelerated weathering or artificially accelerated exposure.

Another standard based on accelerated abrasion tests is “ISO 105 B 02 Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Part B02: Colour fastness to artificial light: Xenon arc fading lamp test”. This standard specifies a method for determining the effect of an artificial light source (D65) representing natural daylight on the colour of textiles of all types and forms. The method is also valid for white (bleached or optically brightened) textiles.

The test method described in the standard “SAE J1960 Accelerated exposure of automotive exterior materials using a controlled-irradiation, water-cooled xenon arc apparatus” covers the operating procedures for a controlled-irradiation, water-cooled xenon arc apparatus used for accelerated exposure of various automotive materials.

The test method described in the standard “SAE J1885 Accelerated exposure of automotive interior trim components using a controlled-radiation water-cooled xenon arc apparatus” includes the operating procedures of a controlled-radiation, water-cooled xenon arc apparatus used for accelerated exposure of various automotive interior trim components.

Briefly, a weather-o-meter uses a xenon arc light source to provide a radiation spectrum that simulates natural sunlight. Glass filters around the xenon arc alter the light spectrum to simulate appropriate end-use conditions. Humidity is provided by a humidifier and direct spray, and temperature is controlled by heaters. Microprocessors monitor and precisely control the radiation applied to the test samples.

Accelerated wear simulates the damaging effects of long-term outdoor exposure of materials and coatings by exposing test samples to changing conditions of light, moisture and heat, the most aggressive components of wear.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides weather-o-meter (WOM) accelerated abrasion testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
