The test method defined in the ASTM D882 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) involves determining the tensile properties of plastics in the form of thin sheets and films (less than 1.0 mm thick). Film is defined in ASTM D883 as an optional term for coating with a nominal thickness of not more than 0,25 mm. The tensile properties of plastics with a thickness of 1.0 mm or more are determined according to the test method defined in the ASTM D638 standard.

The test method described in the standard, whose full name is “ ASTM D882-18 Standard test method for tensile properties of thin plastic coatings,” is used to test all plastics within the specified thickness range and the capacity of the machine used.
Specimen extension can be measured by grip separation, extension indicators or displacement of gauge marks. The procedure for determining the tensile modulus of elasticity is included in a strain ratio. The modulus determination is generally based on the use of the coupling separation as a measure of elongation. However, the use of extensometers as described in this standard is preferred and provisions for the use of such instrumentation are included in the procedure. The test data obtained by this test method are considered suitable for use in engineering design.
When testing tensile strength and tensile elongation, the film is pulled at a speed of 200 mm/min using a tensile testing machine, the strength at tear of the film sample (a value obtained by dividing the tensile load by the cross-sectional area of the sample) and the amount of elongation are calculated.
The ability to resist fracture under tensile stress is one of the most important and widely measured properties of materials used in structural applications. The force per unit area required to break a material in this way is the ultimate tensile strength or tensile strength at break. Different tensile test methods defined in ASTM D882 or ISO 1184 standards and elastomers in ASTM D412 or ISO 37 standards are applied to polymer films.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the tensile properties of thin plastic coatings, within the scope of ASTM D882-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
