EN 10202 Electrolytic Tin Plate and Electrolytic Chrome/Chromium Oxide Coated Steel

EN 10202 Electrolytic Tin Plate and Electrolytic Chrome/Chromium Oxide Coated Steel

The European standard "EN 10202 Cold-reduced tin mill products - Electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide-coated steel" specifies the requirements for tin mill products in sheet or coil form. Tin mill products consist of single- and double-reduced low-carbon mild steel electrolytically coated with tin (tinplate) or chromium/chromium oxide.

EN 10202 Electrolytic Tin Plate and Electrolytic Chrome/Chromium Oxide Coated Steel

Single-reduced tin mill products are specified in nominal thicknesses in multiples of 0,005 mm from 0,16 mm to and including 0,49 mm. Double-reduced tin mill products are specified in nominal thicknesses in multiples of 0,005 mm from 0,12 mm to and including 0,29 mm. Other thicknesses may be ordered by agreement. This standard applies to coils with a nominal minimum width of 600 mm and to sheets cut from coils. For specific uses, coils of standard widths, e.g., tabbed sheets, may be cut into narrow strips for supply in coil form.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Electrolytic tinplate refers to cold-reduced low-carbon mild steel sheet or coil coated on both surfaces with tin applied in a continuous electrolytic process.
  • Differential coating electrolytic tin refers to electrolytic tin in which one surface bears a heavier tin coating than the other. In some cases, one surface has no tin coating.
  • Electrolytic chromium-plated steel is cold-reduced low-carbon mild steel sheet or coil. It is electrolytically treated to produce a duplex film of metallic chromium adjacent to the steel substrate on both surfaces and a layer of hydrated chromium oxides or hydroxides on top. This, can be produced by a hexavalent chromium process (or a trivalent chromium process.
  • Black steel is cold-reduced low-carbon mild steel. It is used to produce sheet metal with an electrolytic metallic coating.
  • Single-reduced refers to the product in which the black sheet is reduced to the desired thickness in a cold-reduced mill and then annealed and tempered rolled.
  • Double-reduced refers to product where mild steel is reduced to the desired thickness in a cold-reduced mill and then annealed and temper-rolled, often with the aid of a water-based lubricant, to achieve a higher gauge reduction, usually over 5 percent.
  • Temper rolling is a secondary rolling process to obtain the desired roughness and mechanical properties.

The classification of the relevant steel grades is based on the standard "EN 10020 Definition and Classification of Steel Grades." Steel grades in this standard are generally classified as unalloyed quality steels, although in some cases, low-alloy quality steels may also be encountered.

For the steel grades included in this standard, the steel names given in the relevant tables are assigned in accordance with "EN 10027-1 Designation systems for steels - Part 1: Steel names." TS grades are batch-annealed grades, and TH grades are continuously annealed grades. The steel numbers given in the relevant tables are assigned in accordance with EN 10027-2.

The following information must be provided by the buyer at the time of request and order to assist the manufacturer in sourcing the correct material:

  • A quantity expressed as area or mass.
  • Description of the material (coil or sheet) and type of metallic coating (usually tin or chrome).
  • Dimensions in millimetres.
  • Number of this standard (EN 10202).
  • Steel name or steel number.
  • Type of annealing.
  • Final process.
  • In the case of tinplate, the coating masses and their combinations described in this standard (standard marking) are marked E (for uniformly coated) or D (for differently coated). In the case of chrome-plated steel, a hexavalent chromium treatment or a trivalent chromium treatment is specified.
  • In the case of tinplate, passivation.
  • Type of lubrication.
  • Intended use of the material, e.g. stamping, drawing, beading, bending and joint forming, assembly work such as soldering and welding, surface coating (metallic and organic coating).
  • Shipping and packaging conditions, such as the inside diameter of the coils, the coil core vertical or horizontal and the coil winding direction if the core is vertical, the maximum and minimum mass or outside diameter of the coils.
  • Maximum weight of bulk packaging for sheets
  • If necessary, a test report in accordance with EN 10204 or an inspection certificate or standard description.

In addition to this information, the buyer should provide the supplier with additional information to ensure that the order requirements are consistent with the product's end use. It is generally recommended that the supplier and buyer agree on the best product specifications to suit the intended use and other requirements. Ultimately, the buyer is responsible for the product description in the order.
