ISO 6743-8 Lubricants, Industrial Oils and Related Products (Class L) - Classification - Part 8: Family R (Temporary Protection Against Corrosion)

In the standard “ISO 6743-8 Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Classification - Part 8: Family R (temporary protection against corrosion)” developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the detailed classification of the R family (temporary protection against corrosion) belonging to class L (lubricants, industrial oils and related products) is explained.

ISO 6743-8 Lubricants, Industrial Oils and Related Products (Class L) - Classification - Part 8: Family R (Temporary Protection Against Corrosion)

This standard should be considered together with the standard “ISO 6743-99 Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Classification - Part 99: General”. This classification applies to product categories assigned to provide temporary protection against corrosion.

This standard includes only products whose main function is to provide temporary protection. The term “temporary” relates to the product’s ability to be removed after a certain period of time, not to the time limitation of product effectiveness. This classification excludes products applied for other purposes but which also provide temporary protection. Vapor phase inhibitors and other chemical products that differ in behavior from petroleum products are also excluded.

This classification applies to the protection of both bare metals and coated metals (such as painted metallic surfaces, car bodies). Furthermore, corrosion is considered as the deterioration of the surfaces of all metals, not just ferrous metals.

This detailed classification of the R family has been established by defining the product categories required for the main applications of temporary corrosion protection, in relation to the duty conditions and the nature of the protective film. Each category is indicated by a symbol consisting of a group of letters that together form a code. The first letter of the category (R) indicates the family of the product under consideration, but the subsequent letters taken separately have no meaning by themselves. The definition of each category can be supplemented by the addition of viscosity grades according to the ISO 3448 standard.

Detailed classification of products providing temporary protection against corrosion is included in the table given in the standard.

Corrosion protection means a method of reducing or preventing corrosion of a storage tank system through cathodic protection, the application of protective coatings, or the use of a stainless material in its construction.

Temporary protection against corrosion consists of measures aimed at preventing damage to equipment due to corrosion within a certain limited period of time. It mainly consists of protecting machinery, devices, fittings, pipelines, measuring and control equipment against atmospheric corrosion during the period between the manufacture of such equipment by the manufacturer and the installation or commissioning by the company that will operate the plant.

Lubricating oils are viscous liquids that form a protective film between two surfaces in relative motion, reducing friction and ensuring smooth operation. They are specially formulated to reduce wear and tear caused by metal-to-metal contact. The function of lubricants is through the liquid film mechanism.

Industrial lubricants are oily or greasy substances applied to moving machine parts, such as gears or bearings, to reduce friction and wear. Lubricants provide smooth, efficient motion by acting as a boundary layer between two surfaces.

Lubricating oils are divided into four broad categories based on the nature of the base oil used:

  • Mineral oils: Derived from crude oil. Offers good viscosity properties and cost advantages. Widely used in engine oils, gear oils and hydraulic oils.
  • Synthetic oils: Usually produced by chemically modifying crude oil molecules or by artificially synthesizing organic compounds. These oils have excellent viscosity-temperature properties and resistance to heat and oxidation.
  • Semi-synthetic oils: Contain a combination of both mineral and synthetic oils and have superior viscosity behavior compared to full mineral oil, especially at low temperatures.
  • Biobased oils: Produced from natural oils and are completely renewable and biodegradable. They have a viscosity and lubricity similar to mineral oils.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “ISO 6743-8 Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Classification - Part 8: Family R (temporary protection against corrosion)” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
