The standard "DIN 18008-1 Glass in buildings - Rules for design and construction - Part 1: Terms and general principles" developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) describes the basic requirements for all parts of the DIN 18008 series of standards. This standard applies, among other things, to terms and definitions for design and construction as well as common rules and indications for necessary and acceptable test verifications.

In this standard, the safety concept, actions, calculation of stresses and deformations, load-carrying capacity and usability as well as the remaining load-carrying capacity are described.
The DIN 18008-1 standard provides specifications for design and construction rules as well as the necessary experimental verifications. The planned action addresses the load-bearing capacity, location permanence and usability of glazed structures. The standard is designed in such a way that additional standard parts can be added if necessary.
Essentially, the standard series “DIN 18008 Glass in buildings – Design and construction rules” consists of the following sections:
This part of the standard (DIN 18008-1) specifies the principles that apply to all parts of the standard. The last article of the standard deals with general design principles such as glass thickness, glass support and glass drilling features.
Regulations for glass dimensioning in the European Union have been constantly evolving and changing in recent years. It is currently the case that structural verification is required for glass structures. The previously valid legal regulations have been replaced by the DIN 18008 series of standards. Calculations are no longer based on a global safety factor, but on partial safety factors. These take into account uncertainties in the system, loads and materials.
In principle, DIN 18008-1 is used for the design of glass structures such as traffic windows or aquariums. However, since these scopes of application are not covered by other parts of the standards, DIN 18008 regards them as unregulated for national building control authorities.
This limitation refers specifically to specified structural boundary conditions such as minimum glazing configurations and support conditions. However, for engineering evaluation DIN 18008 can be used for any design and construction.
In accordance with all requirements of standard DIN 18008-1 and depending on the relevant support conditions, standards DIN 18008-2 and DIN 18008-3 apply. Additional requirements are then specified in standards DIN 18008-4, DIN 18008-5 and DIN 18008-6 depending on the area of application (barrier glass, walkable or accessible).
DIN 18008 regulates the verification of the ultimate limit state, the serviceability limit state, impact resistance and residual load-carrying capacity. Impact resistance and residual load-carrying capacity are ensured by complying with structural rules or by testing.
DIN 18008 Part 1 contains the calculation guidelines and structural provisions that apply to all other parts of the standard. The calculation bases include, for example, design loads for insulating glass units.
In general, the calculation principles include:
