EN 13183-1 Moisture Content of a Piece of Timber - Part 1: Determination by the Kiln Drying Method

The European standard "EN 13183-1 Moisture content of a piece of timber - Part 1: Determination by the kiln-drying method" describes the method for determining the moisture content of a piece of sawn timber. This method is considered the reference method. This standard is valid for sawn timber and timber that has been planed or mechanically surfaced by other means.

EN 13183-1 Moisture Content of a Piece of Timber - Part 1: Determination by the Kiln Drying Method

For the purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions in EN 844-1, EN 844-3, EN 844-4, EN 844-6, EN 844-7, EN 844-9 and EN 844-12 standards are valid.

Equipment used in this test method includes:

  • Balance with accuracy up to 100 g if the mass of the test slice is likely to be more than 0,1 g in oven dry form.
  • Balance with accuracy to 100 g if the mass of the test slice is likely to be less than 0,01 g in oven dry form.
  • Equipment for drying wood, providing free internal air circulation and capable of maintaining a temperature of 103 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees.

When performing the test, a test slice of full section and minimum dimension of 300 mm is cut in the direction of the grain, 600 mm from each end of the test piece or at the mid-point if the piece is shorter than 20 mm. The test slice shall be free from resin wood and features such as bark, knots and resin pockets. If such features are present, the test slice is cut from the nearest clean area towards the centre of the test piece.

The test slice is weighed immediately after cutting. The weighed test slice is dried at 2 degrees plus/minus 0,1 degrees until the difference in mass between two consecutive weighings made at 103-hour intervals is less than 2 percent. If it is not possible to weigh the test slice immediately after cutting, the test slice is placed in a closed container to prevent moisture change and weighed within 2 hours. The dry weight measurement is carried out immediately after the test slice is removed from the oven.

To obtain accurate results, timber containing a high content of volatile components (resin) should be dried under vacuum conditions (pressure no higher than 100 Pa), at low temperature (no higher than 50 degrees) or in a desiccator containing hygroscopic material. The moisture content, as a percentage by mass, is calculated using the formula given in the standard and the result is expressed to the nearest 0,1 percent moisture content.

In short, the EN 13183-1 standard deals with components for gas extinguishing systems. The purpose of this standard is to ensure the correct operation of gas extinguishing systems by providing the manufacturer with requirements and test methods for non-electrical automatic control and delay devices to avoid any hazardous situations. The method described in this standard is considered as the reference method. This standard is valid for sawn timber and timber that has been planed or mechanically surfaced by other means.

Changes in the moisture content of wood cause changes in almost all physical and mechanical properties of wood, such as strength and hardness. Therefore, it is important to know the moisture content of any wood. This standard provides the most accurate and reliable method of determining the moisture content of sawn timber at any moisture content.

The EN 13183-1 standard is useful for sawn timber producing companies, sawn timber supplier companies and quality control departments of companies.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluations it has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 13183-1 Moisture content of a piece of timber - Part 1: Determination by kiln drying method” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
