EN 1062 Paints and Varnishes - Coating Materials and Coating Systems for External Masonry and Concrete

EN 1062 Paints and Varnishes - Coating Materials and Coating Systems for External Masonry and Concrete

The European standard “EN 1062 Paints and varnishes - Coating materials and coating systems for external masonry and concrete” consists of a number of sub-standards under the same title:

EN 1062 Paints and Varnishes - Coating Materials and Coating Systems for External Masonry and Concrete

  • The standard "EN 1062-1 Part 1: Classification" describes a general system for classifying cladding materials and cladding systems for the decoration and protection of new and old, clad or unclad external masonry. This standard also includes an optional classification system based on specific physical properties.

This standard applies to all coating materials and coating systems for masonry, including those designed for use with organic binder plasters and thermal insulation systems. Recommendations for specific coating systems for masonry are included in the annex of the standard (Annex A).

  • The standard “DIN EN 1062-2 Part 2: Determination and classification of the water vapour transmission rate (permeability)” describes a method for determining the water vapour transmission rate of coatings, coating systems and related products intended for external masonry and concrete. This method is valid for coatings and coating systems on porous substrates such as brick, concrete and renders. The procedure using a porous substrate is not valid for coatings with a dry film thickness of less than 80 µm as determined by calculation.
  • The standard "DIN EN 1062-2 Part 3: Determination of liquid water permeability" describes the method for determining the liquid water permeability of coatings, coating systems and related products designed for external masonry and for their classification according to the standard EN 1062-1. This method is valid for coatings and coating systems on porous surfaces such as brick, concrete and renders. A liquid water permeability greater than the specified value cannot be measured accurately with the test method described in this standard.
  • The standard "DIN EN 1062-2 Part 6: Determination of carbon dioxide permeability" describes two methods for determining the carbon dioxide permeability of coatings, coating systems and related products designed for external masonry and concrete. These methods are valid for coatings and coating systems on plaster, concrete and similar porous surfaces.
    • Method A Gravimetric method. The coated side of a test piece is exposed to the measuring gas and the carbon dioxide emitted is determined quantitatively. The test piece encloses a test cell containing an absorber for carbon dioxide, so that the cell is gas-tight to the environment. The test cell is maintained in a dry carbon dioxide/air atmosphere at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and weighed at regular intervals. The carbon dioxide permeability is calculated from the mass increase. The determination is complete when a steady state is reached, i.e. when the mass increase no longer varies with time. For control purposes, a reference film (standard) with known carbon dioxide permeability is measured in each series of determinations.
    • Method B Carrier gas method. A coated test piece is sandwiched between two halves of a permeability cell and the two halves are made gas impermeable to each other and to the environment. The measuring gas passes through one half of the permeability cell, while a carrier gas stream (preferably nitrogen or air, free of carbon dioxide) passes through the other half. This carrier gas stream carries the emitted carbon dioxide to a detection system based on infrared spectrometry or gas chromatography. The determination is carried out at 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees and is completed when a steady state is reached, i.e. when the carbon dioxide permeability no longer varies with time.

Both gases (measurement gas and carrier gas) can be humidified as required. For control purposes, a reference film (standard) with known carbon dioxide permeability is measured in each determination series. Both methods are carried out isostatically, i.e. the test piece is subjected to a partial pressure difference and not to an absolute pressure difference.

When Method A is used, only a dry carbon dioxide/air mixture can be used because the sorbent will react with the moisture in the measurement gas. Therefore, if the carbon dioxide permeability needs to be known at a different humidity level, for example 50 percent relative humidity, only Method B is suitable.

  • The standard “DIN EN 1062-2 Part 7 Determination of crack-bridging properties” describes two methods for determining the crack-bridging properties of coating materials, coating systems and related products designed for external masonry and concrete. This standard should be read together with EN 1062-1 and “N 1504-2 Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Definitions, requirements, quality control and conformity assessment - Part 2: Surface protection systems for concrete”. This standard also gives a classification of coatings according to their crack-bridging properties. The method to be used for a specific product or system should be agreed upon between the parties involved.
  • The standard “DIN EN 1062-11 Part 11: Conditioning methods before testing” describes four methods for conditioning test specimens prepared for testing the weathering resistance of coating materials and coating systems for external masonry and concrete. The specified conditioning methods allow for a wide range of weathering conditions, so that different conditioning methods are only necessary in exceptional cases.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in science and technology in the world and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also testing services in accordance with the standard “EN 1062 Paints and varnishes - Coating materials and coating systems for external masonry and concrete”.
