EN 13964 Suspended Ceilings - Requirements and Test Methods

EN 13964 Suspended Ceilings - Requirements and Test Methods

EN 13964, a European standard, describes the requirements and defines test methods for membranes, standalone infrastructure components, infrastructure kits, and suspended ceiling kits intended for market release. Complete suspended ceiling kits cover infrastructures, individual components of these infrastructures, and membrane components. This standard also covers the principles for assessing conformity and marking products according to the requirements of this standard, as well as test and evaluation methods.

EN 13964 Suspended Ceilings - Requirements and Test Methods

In the absence of another standard, this standard specifies dimensions, tolerances and, where relevant, performance requirements for commonly available ceiling substructures and membrane components. The main features covered by this standard are:

  • Reaction to fire
  • Fire resistance
  • Release and content of dangerous substances
  • Asbestos release
  • Formaldehyde release
  • Other dangerous goods
  • Fracture properties and impact resistance
  • bending tensile strength
  • Load bearing capacity, tolerances and dimensions
  • Electrical safety (as the ability of the product to prevent electric shock from installations that use electricity, such as ventilation devices and lighting, that are part of the installed ceiling)
  • Direct airborne sound insulation
  • sound absorption
  • Thermal conductivity
  • Susceptibility to growth of harmful microorganisms
  • Resistance to fastenings (applies to mechanically fixed components)
  • Durability of bending tensile strength and load bearing capacity against moisture

The EN13964 standard also covers the following requirements:

  • Color and light reflection
  • Setup

However, this standard does not cover:

  • Ceiling substructures and membrane components covered by other standards for in-situ ceilings
  • Stretch ceilings in accordance with EN 14716 standard
  • Ceilings in mobile buildings, caravans and other forms of transportation
  • Suspended ceilings intended for use on ceilings subject to water penetration requirements
  • Ceilings used externally where requirements other than those covered by this standard apply (tunnels, canopies, gas stations, arcades, outdoor sports facilities, car parks, etc.)
  • Heavy-duty suspended ceilings or their supporting structures (e.g. walkable ceilings)
  • Ceilings made of fire protection boards

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services in line with the requirements for suspended ceilings, within the scope of EN 13964 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
