ASTM D3498-18 Standard Specification for Adhesives for Field Bonding of Wood Structural Panels (Plywood or Oriented Strand Board) to Wood-Based Floor System Framing

ASTM D3498-18 Standard Specification for Adhesives for Field Bonding of Wood Structural Panels (Plywood or Oriented Strand Board) to Wood-Based Floor System Framing

The standard "ASTM D3498-18 Standard Specification for Adhesives for Field Bonding of Wood Structural Panels (Plywood or Oriented Strand Board) to Wood-Based Floor System Framing" published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes minimum performance standards and test requirements for void-filling construction adhesives used to bond wood structural panels of plywood or oriented strand board, particularly dimensional lumber or wood I-joists, to wood-based floor system framing in the construction field. This standard provides a basis for ensuring the quality of adhesives and is not intended as an application specification.

ASTM D3498-18 Standard Specification for Adhesives for Field Bonding of Wood Structural Panels (Plywood or Oriented Strand Board) to Wood-Based Floor System Framing

For the purposes of this standard, in addition to the terms and definitions given in the "ASTM D907-12 Standard Terminology for Adhesives" standard, the following definitions apply:

  • A gap-filling adhesive is an adhesive that can form and maintain a bond between surfaces that do not fit tightly. A tight fit is specific to a particular material and industry; for example, standards in construction differ from standards in electronics. Some adhesives bond by bridging the gap without completely filling it, while others bond by completely filling the gap.
  • Open assembly time refers to the time interval between applying the adhesive to the substrates and sealing them together before bonding.
  • Oriented strand board is a mat formed panel product with oriented layers resulting in directional properties.
  • Plywood is a traditional all-veneer panel with alternating layers of veneer oriented perpendicular to each other.
  • A timber-I beam is a structural member manufactured using sawn or structural composite lumber flanges and structural panel webs, bonded together with exterior exposure adhesives, creating an “I” cross-section shape.

This standard specifies test methods and performance requirements for adhesives bonding plywood or oriented strand board to timber frame elements. Tests provide shear strength performance data when substrates are conditioned to simulate various conditions that may occur during substrate adhesive application and curing. The tests are suitable for product performance certification and quality control programs and may be useful to the general public, adhesive manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, architects, contractors, testing laboratories, and other businesses and professionals. Results do not include all possible conditions that may occur during final assembly, but demonstrate a range of performance characteristics for laboratory-controlled bonding variables. Successful testing of compatibility with plywood or oriented strand board does not mean that the same adhesive formulation is compatible with another.

The requirements in this standard are specified as follows:

  • The adhesive must comply with the strength and durability properties shown in the table titled “Adhesive strength and durability requirements”.
  • The adhesive's bonding performance of plywood and oriented strand board is evaluated separately.
  • The adhesion performance of the adhesive to both wood and oriented strand board must meet the requirements specified in this standard prior to certification.

For testing, representative samples of at least 946 cm3 volume are taken from each batch for testing. For sampling purposes, a batch should consist of material from the same batch or mixing operation subjected to the same processing operations and conditions.

The number of test samples shall be as specified in each test method in the table. The average result of the tested samples shall comply with the requirements specified in this specification. The test methods specified in the table include:

  • Test A (wet timber)
  • Test B (frozen timber)
  • Test C (dry timber)
  • Durability (moisture resistance)

Our organization, which has been trying to support businesses from every sector with its testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out in a wide range for years, has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself.
