The EN ISO 2440 Flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials - Accelerated aging tests standard, originally a European standard and later published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes laboratory procedures aimed at mimicking the effects of naturally occurring reactions such as oxidation or hydrolysis with moisture on flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials. The relevant physical properties are measured before and after the application of the specified processes.

Test conditions are given only for open-cell latex, both open and closed-cell polyurethane foams, and closed-cell polyolefin foams. Conditions for other materials will be added as needed. The effect of aging procedures on any physical property of the material can be examined, but those normally tested are elongation and tensile properties or compressive or indentation stiffness properties. These tests are not necessarily related to aging due to service behavior or light exposure.
If desired, the aging conditions described in this standard can be applied to composite structures containing any of the above cellular material types. This can aid in investigating potential interactions between cellular materials and other substrates. Composite structures can be in the form of finished parts.
The number, size, and shape of the test specimens must be appropriate to the property being examined. Prior to aging, they must be prepared according to the dimensions used in the relevant test.
The material should not be tested within 72 hours of production unless it is proven that the average result does not differ by more than plus/minus 10 percent from the results obtained after 72 hours, within 16 or 48 hours of production. If the above criteria are met within the specified time, testing is permitted within 16 or 48 hours.
Prior to testing, test samples must be conditioned for at least 16 hours in one of the following atmospheres specified in ISO 23529, without deformation or degradation:
This period may constitute the final part of the post-production period.
For reference purposes, it is recommended that the test be performed 7 days or longer after the cellular material has been produced.
The material should be rapidly subjected to aging conditions. If the test to be performed is a destructive one, such as examining tensile properties, it is recommended that both the reference and aged materials be tested simultaneously, i.e., after the aged material has been exposed to aging conditions.
Aging conditions should be selected from the following alternatives, suitable for the material being tested. It is recommended that materials with different chemical compositions not be aged in the same container. If a finished product is being examined for interaction effects, it is necessary to ensure that the test container contains only that finished product test sample.
In the world of materials science and engineering, ensuring the longevity and reliability of polymers is vital, especially for applications where exposure to environmental stresses such as heat, humidity, and mechanical wear is unavoidable. The EN ISO 2440 standard, a definitive guide for conducting accelerated aging tests on flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials, offers a standardized framework for simulating years of real-world degradation in a much shorter time, helping manufacturers, engineers, and quality control professionals determine how materials will perform throughout their life cycles.
Cellular polymeric materials (such as foam insulation, cushioning pads, or packaging inserts) are widely used in various sectors, from automotive to construction. However, unlike solid polymers, their porous structure makes them particularly vulnerable to aging effects. The EN ISO 2440 standard addresses this problem by defining precise testing protocols that reveal potential weaknesses before they develop into costly failures.
This standard essentially aims to accelerate the natural aging processes that degrade cellular polymers and enable stakeholders to assess durability without waiting decades. The standard is particularly valuable for the following reasons:
The EN ISO 2440 standard covers both flexible (e.g., polyurethane foams for seating) and rigid (e.g., polystyrene sheets for insulation) cellular materials. It does not cover non-polymer foams or those containing special additives that do not represent standard formulations.
This standard includes a series of controlled tests to simulate environmental stressors. The tests are conducted in calibrated ambient chambers where samples are exposed to high temperatures, humidity, or mechanical loads for specific periods. The aim is to measure measurable changes associated with long-term performance.
Acceptance criteria are material-specific, but generally require less than 10-20% degradation in basic properties for a material to be considered suitable.
For many years, our organization, with its competent and experienced staff, has been understanding the needs of its clients, providing the advanced testing services they require, and assisting in the establishment, implementation, and improvement of management systems. Within this framework, we also provide testing services to businesses in accordance with the "EN ISO 2440 Flexible and rigid cellular polymeric materials - Accelerated aging tests" standard.
