Friction Force Coefficient Tests on Surfaces

Friction Force Coefficient Tests on Surfaces

The coefficient of friction is a dimensionless number defined as the ratio between the frictional force and the normal force. Materials with a friction coefficient of less than 0,1 are considered slippery materials. The friction coefficient depends on the nature of the materials and the surface roughness.

Friction Force Coefficient Tests on Surfaces

A standard referenced in tests for coefficient of friction on surfaces is the following standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO): ISO 8295 Plastics - Film and coating - Determination of coefficients of friction. This standard includes a method for determining the starting and sliding friction coefficients when plastic film and sheet slide on itself or other materials. This method is designed to be used for non-adhesive plastic film and sheets up to approximately 0,5 mm thick.

This test method primarily serves for quality control.

For the purposes of this standard, friction is the resistance to sliding of two surfaces in contact with each other. Static friction refers to the friction that must be overcome as a threshold value at the start of the sliding motion. Dynamic friction refers to the friction that continues during sliding motion at a given speed. Frictional force is the force required to overcome friction. The normal force is the force acting perpendicular to the surfaces in contact. The friction coefficient expresses the ratio of the frictional force acting perpendicular to the two surfaces in contact to the normal force.

A standard referenced in tests for coefficient of friction force on surfaces is the following standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM): ASTM D1894-14 Standard test method for static and kinetic coefficients of friction of plastic film and coating. This test method involves determining the initiation and sliding friction coefficients when the plastic film and sheet slides on itself or on other materials under specified test conditions. A stationary sled with a movable plane or a movable sled with a fixed plane is used during testing. Both procedures give the same coefficients of friction values for a given sample.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services for determining the friction force coefficient on surfaces with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
