The test method defined in the ASTM B368 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes the conditions required in the copper-accelerated acetic acid-salt spray (CASS) test for specification purposes. This standard does not specify the type of test sample to be used for a particular product or the exposure times or interpretation of results.

The test method presented in this standard, whose full name is “ASTM B368-21 Standard test method for copper accelerated acetic acid-salt spray (fog) testing (CASS test)”, covers decorative copper on steel, zinc alloys, aluminum alloys, and plastics designed for heavy-duty use. It is applied to evaluate the abrasive performance of /nickel/chrome or nickel/chrome coatings. This test method is also used for testing anodized aluminum. The suitability of this test and the correlation of results with service experience should be determined earlier for coating systems or materials other than those specified here.
The test method defined in ASTM B368-21 is a cyclic corrosion test using a solution of sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate that is much more dilute than conventional salt mist (spray). Also known as the CASS test for short, this test is widely used to evaluate paints on steel and to determine the corrosion resistance of various aluminum alloys. It is also used to test chrome plating on zinc and steel castings. Specially developed for testing nickel/chromium and copper/nickel/chrome decorative electro-deposit coatings. In addition, this test method is also used for research and development, specification acceptance, production control of the product or process, and simulated service evaluations.
During sample preparation, the cut edges of multi-layered or coated samples are coated so as not to cause edge corrosion. When ready for the test chamber, metallic coated specimens are cleaned with a suitable cleaning or solvent solution. Other samples with organic and non-metallic coating are not cleaned.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, is the standard test for copper accelerated acetic acid-salt spray (fog) test within the scope of ASTM B368-21 standard. It also provides (CASS testing) services.
