ISO 5659-2 Plastics - Smoke Generation - Part 2: Determination of Optical Density by Single Cabinet Test

The ISO 5659-2 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes a test method for measuring smoke output from the exposed surface of material or composite samples.

ISO 5659-2 Plastics - Smoke Generation - Part 2: Determination of Optical Density by Single Cabinet Test

This standard applies to specimens having a substantially flat surface and a thickness not exceeding 25 mm when placed in the horizontal direction and subjected to certain levels of thermal irradiation in a closed cabinet with or without the application of a pilot flame. The test method described here applies to all plastics.

In the mentioned standard, it is aimed that the optical density values determined in the tests are taken as specific to the tested form and thickness of the sample or mounting material and not to be considered as natural properties.

This standard is intended for use in buildings and transport vehicles such as ships and trains in general, research and development, and fire safety engineering. It is not a basis for ratings for building codes or other purposes.

Also, this standard does not provide a basis for estimating the smoke density produced by materials after exposure to heat and flame under real conditions. This test method excludes the effect of irritants on the eye and deals with loss of vision from smoke density that is not generally relevant to its potential.

Smoke production from a material varies according to the radiation level to which the sample is exposed. Results from the test method in this standard are based on exposure to specific radiation levels of 25 kW/m2 and 50 kW/m2.

Within the scope of this standard, the optical density of smoke is a measure of the degree of opacity of the smoke, taken as the negative common logarithm of the relative light transmission. Mass optical density is a measure of the degree of opacity of the smoke in terms of mass loss of the material.

In the meantime, the first part of the ISO 5658 standard (the guide on optical density testing) has been canceled and combined with the ISO 5659-2 standard.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, smoke formation and single-cabinet testing in plastics and test services for the determination of optical density within the scope of ISO 5659-2 standard. gives.
