FCA MS.90053 Performance Requirements for Organic Coatings for Interior Painting

FCA MS.90053 Performance Requirements for Organic Coatings for Interior Painting

The “FCA MS.90053 Performance Requirements for Organic Coatings for Interior Painting” standard, developed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), an Italian-American automotive company , aims to provide a standard format defining the paint performance requirements for painted interior parts purchased in plastic and metal. Requirements relating to each stage of the product manufacturing process are summarized in the “Material Performance Requirements” section of the standard.

FCA MS.90053 Performance Requirements for Organic Coatings for Interior Painting

This standard covers the performance requirements for organic coatings for interior parts supplied to FCA. The drawing/source package for the part lists suitable material standards to meet the performance requirements of this standard.

Standard coatings according to FCA MS.90053 standard:

  • Standard high or low gloss coatings are designed for use on component areas that receive minimal or occasional finger or hand contact from occupants. Areas that do not receive heavy traffic fall into this category (e.g. door spear, instrument panel bezel). FCA defines standard touch parts for material engineering.
  • Mar and scratch testing on low gloss coatings on parts included in standard contact areas is performed in accordance with the section “For high and standard touch coatings” in the tables within the standard.
  • Mar and scratch testing on high gloss coatings on parts included in standard contact areas is carried out in accordance with the section “Standard touch surfaces” in the tables within the standard.

High traffic pavements according to FCA MS.90053 standard

  • It can be installed vertically or horizontally in the vehicle interior in areas that can reasonably be expected to be in constant contact with the vehicle owner's clothing (seats, steering wheels, armrest areas).
  • Areas that vehicle occupants can reasonably be expected to regularly contact without intending to use the feature or function (e.g., gear knobs, steering wheel frames, center console surfaces) may be mounted vertically or horizontally within the vehicle interior cabin.
  • Areas that might reasonably be expected to come into contact with purses, zip-lock bags, jewelry, acrylic nail key sets, beverage containers, and similar irritating items (e.g., horizontal partitions and horizontal doors, cup holders and surrounding areas).
  • Marring and scratch testing on low gloss coatings on parts mounted vertically and horizontally in high traffic areas is performed in accordance with the section “For high and standard touch coatings” in the tables within the standard.
  • Marring and scratch testing on high gloss coatings on parts mounted vertically in high traffic areas is performed in accordance with the “High traffic vertical surfaces” section in the tables within the standard.
  • Marring and scratch testing on high gloss coatings on parts mounted horizontally in high traffic areas is performed in accordance with the “High traffic horizontal surfaces” section in the tables within the standard.

Approvals for dry film construction requirements to FCA MS.90053 require certification of the coating material in accordance with the standard appendix (Appendix C) with technical data sheets co-signed by the material supplier and FCA. The coating material certificate documents the supplier’s proposal for a dry film construction that meets the performance requirements.

Tests are carried out and the minimum film build requirements are met. The target dry film build of each paint layer shall be such that compliance with the minimum and maximum. The dry film build requirements are listed in the table titled “Applicable paint layer dry film build requirement” in the standard.

The mixing ratio requirements in this standard are specified as follows: For two-component materials, the supplier provides a defined mixing ratio range from Part A to Part B that meets the performance requirements of the coating. The mixing ratio range is validated to cover all film structure and cooking window specifications. This ratio range is documented in the coating material certificate co-signed by Materials Engineering / Supplier.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “FCA MS.90053 Organic coatings performance requirements for interior painting” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
