The D42 1775 standard, developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe, describes a test method for determining the resistance of interior and exterior plastic parts of vehicles against abrasion and scratching in the automotive industry.

The scratch resistance of plastics is defined as the resistance of the material to a mechanical stress, for example the scratching action of a sharp edge or a round object. The tester makes scratches on the painted or unpainted plastic surface at intervals of about 2 mm. Each scratch is produced in one motion in one direction. A colorimeter is then used to determine the chromatic aberration relative to the unscratched surface. A colorimeter is a device that measures the absorbance of light at certain wavelengths with a certain solution.
Wear is the process of friction, scratching, fraying, or deterioration. It can be intentionally applied in a controlled process using an abrasive. Wear can be an undesirable effect of normal use or exposure to the elements. The wear resistance of materials and products is determined by various testing methods. These testing methods generally utilize a specific abrasive or other controlled abrasion techniques.
With such standardized measurements, two values are obtained: the wear rate and the wear index (normalized wear rate). Wear rate is the amount of mass lost per 1000 wear cycles. The wear index is the ratio of the former to the known wear rate for some specific reference materials.
As an alternative to the mentioned standard, the PV 3952 Plastic interior components - Scratch resistance test (followed by color measurement) standard was developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group. This standard is used to determine the scratch resistance of painted and unpainted plastic interior components. For this purpose, colorimetric measurement and optical evaluation are made on the surface of the part after it has been drawn.
Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services to determine the resistance of internal and external plastic parts against abrasion and scratching within the scope of the D42 1775 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
