The ASTM E84-21a standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes a fire reaction test for the comparative surface combustion behavior of building materials. This test is applied to exposed surfaces such as walls and ceilings. During the test, the specimen either supports itself with its own structural quality, is held in place by supports added along the test surface, or is fixed from the rear. This test method takes 10 minutes.

The following standards are also taken into account in the testing of materials, according to test methods that are applications or variations of the test method or apparatus presented in the ASTM E84-21a standard:
The purpose of the test method described in the ASTM E84-21a standard is to determine the relative combustion behavior of the material by observing the flame propagating throughout the sample. This test method is designed to make comparative measurements of selected red oak and fiber-cement board surfaces and surface flame spread and smoke density measurements only, under certain fire exposure conditions.
This test method does not cover:
This standard does not purport to address all, if any, use-related security concerns. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services for the surface burning properties of construction materials under the ASTM E84-21a standard , thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
