49 CFR 571.101 Controls and Indicators (FSMVV 101)

Standard 49 CFR 571.101, published among federal motor vehicle safety standards, describes requirements for controls and indicators such as speedometers and odometers.

49 CFR 571.101 Controls and Indicators (FSMVV 101)

Federal motor vehicle safety standards are codified in section 49 (49 CFR 571) of the US Code of Federal Regulations. FMVSS standard 101 is regulated as 49 CFR 571.101. This standard contains performance requirements for the location, identification, color and illumination of motor vehicle controls, gauges and indicators.

The purpose of this standard is to reduce the safety hazards posed by the driver's distraction, the driving task, and errors in the selection of controls, in order to ensure the accessibility, visibility and recognition of motor vehicle controls, indicators and indicators, and to facilitate the correct selection of controls in day and night conditions. This standard applies to passenger cars, multi-purpose passenger cars, trucks and buses.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • The term control refers to the manually operated part of a device that enables the driver to alter the state or operation of the vehicle or a vehicle subsystem.
  • Indicator refers to a device that indicates the magnitude of the physical features the device is designed to detect.

Every passenger car, multi-purpose passenger car, truck and bus equipped with a control, indicator or indicator listed in the tables within the standard must meet the requirements of this standard for the location, identification, color and illumination of that control and indicator.

The controls listed in the relevant tables must be located so that they can be operated by the driver under the conditions described. Likewise, the indicators listed in the relevant tables must be placed so that they are visible to the driver under the conditions described.

These standards (FMVSS standards), mainly aimed at ensuring safety in motor vehicles, are divided into three groups under 49 CFR 571 coding:

  • The 100 series FMVSS standards are about collision avoidance.
  • The 200 series FMVSS standards relate to crash-resistance.
  • The 300 series FMVSS standards are about post-crash survival.

These standards were first published in 1967 , and the requirements are updated periodically.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for controls and indicators for motor vehicle safety controls, within the scope of 49 CFR 571.101 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
