The GMW 14829 standard, developed by the General Motors company, which includes brands such as Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet, defines the test methods used to evaluate the adhesion properties of painted metal, plastic and sealing materials before and after environmental tests. This standard describes crosshatching and “X” cut tape adhesion tests using cutting tools or a cutting guide.

All paint systems must meet adhesion requirements when the appropriate method is used. Unless otherwise specified, dry film thickness determines which guide or tool is required. If any method cannot be used due to size or shape restrictions, performing this test is at the discretion of the responsible engineer. Nothing in the specification supersedes applicable regulations unless a specific exemption is granted.
In the tests, the test pieces must be the finished part. If the size, shape and similar properties of the finished part are not suitable, tests are carried out on specially prepared coated test panels. Adhesion of organic coatings determined by this test method should be defined as the tendency of the coating to separate near drawn lines in the form of a lattice pattern that cuts through the coating before and after exposure to defined environmental conditions.
However, this test method may include hazardous materials, processes and equipment. Therefore, it does not recommend addressing all application-oriented security problems. It is the responsibility of the user performing these tests to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions.
In short, the peel adhesion test is a bit test method for determining the adhesion strength of organic coatings when applied to smooth, flat panel surfaces. This standard helps to provide relative ratings for a range of coated panels that show significant differences in adhesion. The materials under test are applied to flat panels, especially a type of sheet metal, in uniform thickness. Once the materials are dry, adhesion is determined by pressing the panels under a round pencil loaded with increasing amounts of weight until the coating separates from the substrate surface.
Our organization also provides tape adhesion test services for paint surfaces within the scope of GMW 14829 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
