Hyundai Kia MS200-42 Test Standard - Soft Vulcanized Rubber
Developed by Hyundai-Kia Motors, the “Hyundai Kia MS200-42 Test Standard - Soft Vulcanized Rubber ” is a material specification designed to test and evaluate soft vulcanized rubber used in automotive parts. This standard defines the requirements, test methods, and quality characteristics for rubber materials, ensuring that performance criteria for durability, flexibility, and environmental resistance are met in vehicle applications.

This standard includes the quality requirements of surface treatments such as real wood, real aluminum, real carbon, film insert molding, in-mold decoration, hydrographic surface treatment, PVO molding, hot stamping, printing and similar processes (chrome plating in accordance with Hyundai MS625-02 standard).
This standard is generally used in the following types:
- Type A: Internal parts
- Type B: External parts
Another table identifies the relevant test items specified in this standard:
- View
- Brightness
- Pencil hardness
- Scratch resistance
- Adhesion
- Impact resistance
- moisture resistance
- Water resistance
- Salt spray resistance
- acid resistance
- Alkali resistance
- Chemical resistance
- Sunscreen lotion resistance
- heat resistance
- Thermal cycling resistance
- Fade resistance
- Weather resistance
- Wear resistance
- Notch resistance
- Air purifier resistance
- Hazardous materials (must meet Hyundai MS201-02 standard)
The standard laboratory conditions for testing should be: 23°C (72°F) plus/minus 2°C (82°F) and 50% (82°F) plus/minus 5% (82°F) relative humidity. The sample should be cut from the final product, and the cut area on the product should be reported. However, if this is not possible, the sample should be obtained using the same process as the final product. All tests should be performed on samples that have been kept under standard conditions for a minimum of 72 hours of conditioning. At least three samples should be tested, and all test results should meet each requirement. The worst-case result should be reported as a representative value.
The test methods defined in this standard are:
- Appearance: Must comply with the test method for coatings and coating films described in the Hyundai MS600-35 standard.
- Brightness: Must comply with ISO 2813 standard and measure brightness at 60 degrees.
- Pencil hardness: Must comply with ISO 15184 standard.
- Scratch resistance: The surface of the samples is scratched under the conditions specified in the table titled “Test conditions of scratch resistance” and its appearance is evaluated as follows according to the table titled “Scratch resistance classification test results”.
- Level 5: Unnoticeable surface scratches
- Level 4: Slightly noticeable surface scratches
- Level 3: Surface scratches that are noticeable but not serious
- Level 2: Noticeable surface scratches
- Level 1: Extremely noticeable surface scratches
- Adhesion: The sample is placed on a horizontal surface. A cutting guide is placed on the sample surface, and the coating layer is cut with a cutting blade at an angle of approximately 30 degrees until the cutting blade reaches the substrate. This process is repeated to make 100 crosscuts (10 x 10) with a 2 mm spacing. Within 5 minutes of applying the cellophane tape to the crosscut, the tape is pulled back at a 90-degree angle within 0,5 seconds. Adhesion properties are evaluated according to the table titled "Adhesion Test Conditions." The result is evaluated as follows:
- Level M-1.0: No flakes were detected at the edges of the cuts. No erosion was detected at the intersection.
- Level M-2.0: Small flakes were detected at the edges of the cuts. No erosion was detected at the intersection.
- Level M-3.0: Complete flaking was detected at the edges of the cuts. Flaking was detected at the intersection. Less than 50 percent delamination occurred per intersection area.
- Level M-4.0: Significant spalling was detected at the intersection. Delamination is approximately 5 mm by cross-sectional area.
- Level M-5.0: Excessive peeling was detected at the edges of the cuts. Delamination in the cut area was approximately 20.
- Level M-6.0: Delamination occurred throughout the entire cross-sectional area.
- Impact resistance: A specimen, with the coated surface facing up, is placed in a drop-weight tester as defined in ISO 6272-2. Impact is applied to the coated surface under the conditions specified in the table titled "Impact resistance test conditions." Cracks and peeling are examined. The specimen thickness should be 3,0 mm plus/minus 0,2 mm. If the cut specimen is thicker than the specified thickness, the specimen is ground thinner with sandpaper.
- Moisture resistance: After conditioning the samples in accordance with the table titled "Test Conditions for Moisture Resistance," the surface moisture is removed with an air blower and left at room temperature for 1 hour. The appearance of the test samples should be checked with the naked eye. Adhesion properties should be evaluated according to this standard.
- Water resistance: Test samples are immersed in tap water according to the conditions specified in the table titled "Water resistance test conditions." Surface moisture is removed with an air blower. The specimen is left to stand for 1 hour. The surface appearance is checked, and an adhesion test is immediately performed according to this standard.
- Salt Spray Resistance: Specimens are subjected to salt spray for 240 hours in accordance with the table titled "Test Conditions for Salt Spray Resistance" and the KS D 9502 standard. After salt spray, surface moisture is removed with an air blower. They are left at room temperature for 1 hour. The appearance of the test specimens is examined. Adhesion testing is performed immediately in accordance with this standard.
This standard also defines the following test methods:
- acid resistance
- Alkali resistance
- Chemical resistance
- Sunscreen resistance
- heat resistance
- Thermal cycling resistance
- Fade resistance
- Weather resistance
- Wear resistance
- Flat surface
- Curved surface
- Crack resistance
