GMW 14909 Wheel Radial Fatigue Test

GMW 14909 Wheel Radial Fatigue Test

In the GMW 14909 standard developed by the General Motors company, a test method is defined to determine the fatigue strength of passenger car and light duty truck wheels when subjected to radial fatigue load.

GMW 14909 Wheel Radial Fatigue Test

Radial fatigue testing aims to find the structural performance of a wheel for normal road use in passenger cars, light trucks and multi-purpose vehicles. For the wheel to pass the test, it must withstand repeated radial loading for a certain number of cycles.

The fatigue life of a wheel subjected to repeated loading is calculated from the stress values obtained from the static analysis. The accuracy of the stress value depends on various parameters such as tire modeling, simulation methods, load applications and more.

The vertical stiffness of the tire plays a vital role in radial testing, as the tire transfers the load from the driven drum to the wheel. Tire vertical spring rate testing is generally performed according to the SAE J2704 standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE J2704 tire normal force/deflection and gross footprint size test). Tire material properties are adjusted to fit the vertical hardness test curve. Radial fatigue testing is simulated in a static condition according to the SAE J328 standard using the approved tire model (SAE J328 Wheels - Passenger car and light truck performance requirements and test procedures). It gives confidence in obtaining simulation stress values close to laboratory strain gauge measurements and thus estimates of wheel life.

The tire is designed and manufactured to fit a standard rim, and when fitted to the correct rim, the tire performs to the required level. It goes without saying that if the tire is mounted on an unsuitable rim, the life of the tire will be shortened. Essentially, a wheel has to pass three types of tests before it goes into production: the cornering fatigue test, the radial fatigue test, and the impact test. Radial fatigue testing, in simple terms, is done to find the number of cycles the wheel will fail.

Our organization also provides wheel radial fatigue testing services within the scope of GMW 14909 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
