BMW AA-0180 Cross Scan Test

BMW AA-0180 Cross Scan Test

Measuring the bond strength of paints, adhesives, varnishes and similar coatings is essential to ensure that the coating bonds well to the substrate and performs satisfactorily. Various adhesion testing methods are available to determine how well the coating bonds to the solid substrate. One of these test methods is described in the BMW AA-0180 standard developed by BMW, a multinational vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Germany.

BMW AA-0180 Cross Scan Test

The cross hatch test method is widely used to evaluate the adhesion of paint coatings and allows the quality of adhesion to the substrate to be determined.

The cross hatch test is a fast and easy-to-use visual comparison method for paint and powder coatings up to 250µm thick. The coating is cut into small squares so that lateral bonding is reduced and coating adhesion is evaluated according to ISO 2409 and ASTM D3359 or corporate standards.

The ISO 2409 Paints and varnishes - Cross cut test standard describes a test method for assessing the resistance of paint coatings and varnishes to detach from substrates by penetrating the substrate when a lattice pattern is cut at right angles to the coating.

ASTM D3359-17 Standard test methods for grading adhesion by tape test describes two test methods for evaluating the adhesion of relatively ductile coating films to metallic substrates by applying and removing pressure sensitive tape over cuts made in the film. Test method A is primarily intended for field use, while test method B is more suitable for use in laboratory or shop environments.

The cross-scan adhesion test described in the BMW AA-0180 standard is performed in a laboratory on coatings less than 125 microns thick. It uses a cross-scan pattern created using a cutting guide or a special cross-scan cutter with pre-set blades.

Briefly, the crosshatch test is intended to assess the resistance of paint coatings to separation from substrates by penetrating the substrate when a lattice pattern is cut at right angles to the coating. The measured property depends, among other factors, on the adhesion of the coating to either the previous coating or the substrate.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides cross-scan testing services within the scope of BMW AA-0180 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
