PSA B62 0030 Thermoplastics, Thermoset Materials, Thermoplastic Elastomers and Rubbers - Properties

PSA B62 0030 Thermoplastics, Thermoset Materials, Thermoplastic Elastomers and Rubbers - Properties

The “PSA B62 0030 Thermoplastics, thermoset materials, thermoplastic elastomers and rubbers - Specifications” standard, developed by PSA, a French multinational automotive company, describes material requirements in the form of a code. This standard applies to thermoplastic and thermoset materials, thermoplastic elastomers, and rubbers. These materials can be rigid or flexible, solid or low-density, reinforced or unreinforced. Cellular materials, yarns, and fibers are subject to specific norms. This standard does not include the chemical composition of the materials.

Material-specific functional requirements are coded according to 5 main criteria:

  • Exposure to light or chemical environments
  • Exposure to heat
  • Reaction to the coup
  • Surface coating (decoration, functional)
  • Exposure to ambient air (ozone resistance)

This coding is then completed according to specific criteria.

In terms of heavy metal compliance, any material must meet the PSA B20 0250 standard, which requires mandatory compliance with regard to heavy metals for all products and parts applied to and mounted on the vehicle.

The criterion for exposure to light or chemical medium is coded as follows:

  • Exposure
  • Avoidance
  • Chemical environment under the hood.
  • Chemical environment under the body
  • Chemical environment under the hood and body.
  • Low light exposure indoors - Durability 3 years
  • Indoor use exposed to light - Durability 3 years (tinted glass)
  • Indoor use exposed to light - Durability 3 years (clear glass)
  • Outdoor use exposed to light - Durability 3 years (unpainted part)
  • Indoor use exposed to light - Durability 5 years (tinted glass)
  • Outdoor use exposed to light - Durability 5 years (unpainted part)
  • Indoor use exposed to high light - Durability 3 years (tinted glass)
  • Indoor use exposed to high light - Durability 5 years

The heat exposure criterion is coded as follows:

  • 70 degrees
  • 85 degrees
  • 100 degrees
  • 110 degrees
  • 120 degrees
  • 130 degrees
  • 140 degrees
  • 150 degrees
  • 170 degrees
  • 190 degrees
  • 210 degrees
  • 210 degrees

The impact properties of materials are related to the type of fracture (brittle or ductile) at a given temperature. For legal or standard requirements, the impact response criterion is codified as follows:

  • Ductile at 23 degrees
  • Ductile at minus 20 degrees.
  • Ductile at minus 30 degrees.
  • Ductile at minus 35 degrees.
  • Ductile at minus 40 degrees.

Ductility specifications are provided only for materials used in parts that must meet legal or standard requirements at a specific temperature. Ductility specifications should not be confused with impact resistance requirements, which must be defined in the functional requirements of the part.

The surface coating criterion is coded as follows:

  • No
  • Paint
  • MISCELLANEOUS
  • Paint + others

When surface coating is required, the coating requirement must be specified in the technical specifications. “Others” encompasses various surface coating processes: chrome plating, hot foiling, vacuum metallic coating, varnishing, co-extruded surface coating, etc.

The criterion for exposure to ambient air is coded as follows:

  • Not exposed
  • Inside the vehicle
  • Exterior and undercarriage of the vehicle
  • Under the hood

In addition to the main criteria, specific criteria can also complement the specifications. These are coded as follows:

  • A. Resistance to friction.
  • B. Resistance to abrasion and scratches.
  • C Flammability
  • D. Resistance to sweating
  • E. Reaction to fogging
  • F. Resistance to occasional contact with liquid (staining)
  • Contact with G Paint
  • H Resistance to persistent contact with liquids
  • I. Resistance to protective and protective decontaminating products.
  • J Shore hardness
  • Cold hardness
  • Permanent deformation in L tension.
  • M Tear resistance
  • N Adhesion - Co-molding, in-mold, co-extrusion
  • Evaluation of strong odors
  • P Pressure elasticity
  • Q Elongation at the point of rupture
  • Tensile strength
  • X Crystallization tendency
  • Tendency to stain via extraction.

In the complex world of automotive manufacturing, material selection is paramount in ensuring vehicle safety, durability, and performance. The PSA B62 0030 standard addresses the increasing complexity of modern automobiles, where plastics and elastomers are an integral part of everything from interior trim and gaskets to under-hood components. By defining precise coding systems and test protocols, this standard ensures materials can withstand extreme conditions such as heat, chemicals, and mechanical stress, while also complying with global regulations regarding heavy metals and recyclability.

The PSA B62 0030 standard essentially establishes a coding system for material identification. This alphanumeric code summarizes critical attributes, allowing engineers to quickly assess suitability for specific applications. The code is broken down as follows:

  • The basic material type indicates whether it is thermoplastic (e.g., polypropylene), thermoset (e.g., epoxy resins), thermoplastic elastomer, or rubber (e.g., ethylene-propylene-diene monomer).
  • Regulatory compliance: Indicates compliance with heavy metal restrictions (e.g., free of lead, cadmium, or mercury according to end-of-life vehicle standards).
  • Environmental resistance: Ratings for exposure to light (UV aging), chemicals (oils, fuels), and heat (up to 150 degrees for under-hood parts).
  • Mechanical properties: Impact resistance, ductility, elasticity, and tensile strength criteria.

Materials must pass the following tests in order to receive approval:

  • Thermal aging: Exposure to high temperatures (e.g., 80-120 degrees Celsius for 168-1000 hours). Provides a longer lifespan for engine compartments or instrument panels.
  • Chemical resistance: Immersion in liquids such as gasoline, brake fluid, or cleaners. Prevents deterioration in fuel systems or interiors.
  • Mechanical testing: Tensile strength (ISO 527 standard), elongation at break, and impact (Charpy method). Verifies structural integrity during collisions or vibrations.
  • Flammability: Horizontal/vertical burn tests (equivalent to FMVSS 302 standard). Critical for safety in EV battery packs.
  • Environmental: UV attrition (SAE J1960 standard) and humidity cycles. Simulates real-world outdoor exposure.

If there are any discrepancies in any area, the application will be rejected, and a detailed fault analysis will be required for resubmission.

The PSA B62 0030 standard is widely used in PSA vehicle manufacturing and affects the following components:

  • Interior components: Soft-touch instrument panels and door panels made from scratch-resistant and anti-fog thermoplastic elastomers.
  • Sealing systems: Rubber seals and air strips that maintain airtight integrity in harsh weather conditions.
  • Exterior components: Thermoplastic bumpers and fenders designed for low-cycle recyclability.
  • Under-hood components: Thermoset insulators for wiring harnesses, oil-resistant and heat-resistant.
