EDAG PVE.4.01.01.0001 Surface Properties of Coated External Parts - Surface Properties of Painted External Components
The EDAG Group is one of the world’s largest independent engineering partners for vehicles and smart factories. EDAG assumes responsibility for the entire process chain from product development to the implementation of final production equipment. The standard “EDAG PVE.4.01.01.0001 Surface properties of coated exterior parts - Surface properties of painted exterior components” developed by this organization describes a test method for defining the surface properties of coated components on the exterior of a vehicle.

The essential conditions for the test setup, measured variables, test equipment, load condition and similar conditions are contained in the relevant regulation or standard and also in the material data sheet. The test pieces shall be uniform in appearance over the entire surface and shall comply with the design requirements and the release sample for surface feel, gloss and color. Pores, cracks, paint runs and other defects that impair the intended appearance are not permitted. Each individual value shall meet the specified limit value.
In preparation for the test, the construction condition of the test piece must be documented. In addition, it must be checked whether the component is in a suitable condition for the test. Unless otherwise specified in the relevant regulation or standard, the samples required for individual tests are conditioned at a temperature of plus 48 degrees for 60 hours. Other necessary test preparations are taken from the relevant standard or regulation.
In this standard, the test procedure is specified as follows:
- Coating thickness: According to the standard “ISO 2808 Paints and varnishes - Determination of film thickness”, microscopic examination of the cross section is carried out.
- Gloss: Gloss is determined according to the standard “BS EN ISO 2813 Paints and varnishes - Determination of gloss value at 20 degrees, 60 degrees and 85 degrees”.
- Coloring according to the color tone standard: Visual inspection is carried out according to the standard “PVE.4.03.01.0004 Visual color matching”. For colorimetric evaluation, colorimetric evaluation is carried out according to the standard “PVE.4.03.01.0005 Colorimetric evaluation of exterior automotive coatings”.
- Evaluation of effect coatings: Effect coatings are evaluated according to the standard “PVE.4.03.01.0006 Differences in gloss and granularity of effect coatings”.
- Structural measurement: Measuring system, wave scanning, measurement according to the manufacturer's specifications. Requirements must be defined individually.
- Cross-cut: Tape pulling is performed according to the standard “ISO 2409 Paints and varnishes - Cross-cut test”. An alternative during application is a cross-cut with a cutting blade followed by tape pulling (if a standard cross-cut cannot be made on the component for geometric reasons). The test is performed with a cutting blade with a sharp blade. A cross-cut is used and the cut must pass through the metallic coating to the substrate. The blade is directed at a 90-degree angle to the test surface. It must also be ensured that there are no substances on the surface that could impair the adhesion of the tape. If necessary, the surface is cleaned, for example with isopropyl alcohol. Then, tape is applied over the cut area and pressed until the scratch is clearly visible through the tape. The tape should be pulled jerkily in the direction of the sharp angle. After removing the tape, no paint particles should stick to the tape.
- High pressure steam jet test: It is carried out according to the standard “PVE.0.01.08.0009 High pressure steam jet test”. Peeling of paint is prohibited.
- Condensed water test: Performed according to “BS EN ISO 6270-2 Paints and varnishes - Determination of moisture resistance - Condensation (in-cabinet exposure with heated water tank)”. Test duration is 240 hours following cross-cut test and high-pressure steam jet test.
- Climate cycle test: It is carried out according to the standard “PVE.0.01.08.0001 Climate cycle test”. The number of cycles is 20, followed by section test and high pressure steam jet test.
- Temperature change test followed by impact test: In the heat storage test, 90 hours at 240 degrees, followed by at least 30 minutes of air conditioning at room temperature, followed by cross-cut test and high-pressure steam jet test. In the cold storage test, after heat storage, one of the parts shall be subjected to cold storage in accordance with the standard “PVE.0.01.08.0003 Cold storage test”.
- Stone cracking test: “ISO 20567-1 It is carried out in accordance with process B described in the standard “Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance of coatings to stone impact - Part 1: Multiple impact test”. Loosely attached coating material should be removed with adhesive tape.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the standard “EDAG PVE.4.01.01.0001 Surface properties of coated external parts - Surface properties of painted external components” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
