Mercedes-Benz DBL 1000 Interior Emissions and Odor

Mercedes-Benz DBL 1000 Interior Emissions and Odor

The "Mercedes-Benz DBL 1000 Interior Emissions and Odors" standard, published by the Mercedes-Benz Group, applies to components, individual parts, and materials that can come into direct or indirect contact with the vehicle's interior air. All components located directly in the passenger compartment are considered to be in direct contact. Anything within the passenger compartment that can emit emissions through any type of gap (e.g., ventilation ducts, trunk openings) is considered to be indirect contact. These include, for example, luggage compartments, seals, air conditioning and heating systems, and spaces behind panels.

All interior components, individual parts, and materials must comply with the specifications of this standard. Testing is carried out in accordance with the requirements described in this standard.

The following limitations and exclusions to coverage apply:

  • Odor and emission requirements for cavity protection wax are included in standards MBN 10046 and MBN 55555-8.
  • Testing is not required on galvanized components.
  • Individual parts and materials weighing less than 50 g or having areas smaller than 148 x 210 mm (DIN A5) must also comply with the requirements of this standard. However, their results do not necessarily need to be submitted for inspection (the specialist department may request the testing). The area indicator applies, for example, to sheet materials, paints, and adhesive systems, if applicable.
  • Not all tests described in this standard need to be performed each time. The application matrix in the table titled "Application matrix for tests" applies. Additionally, in certain cases, it may be necessary to develop a specific test plan in coordination with the responsible specialized department. Additional tests may be requested by the supplier.

The general requirements in this standard are determined as follows:

  • To ensure product safety and quality and to meet certification requirements, all relevant legal regulations and laws must be complied with. The relevant requirements of the Mercedes-Benz Group also apply.
  • All materials, process engineering, component parts and systems must comply with all applicable legal requirements regarding components and recyclability.
  • Must comply with the standard “DBL 8585 General requirements environmental protection, hazardous substances, negative substance list for hazardous goods material selection”.
  • Generally, it is necessary to use materials and processes with the lowest possible emissions and odor values. When sufficient material options are available, the variant with the least critical emissions and odor should be used. Production and processing should be optimized for emissions and odor. Materials and components must meet specified limits even after aging or standard operating temperatures have been implemented. Transfer parts must meet current requirements.
  • The transfer of emissions data must always be done via the material.one platform.
  • The specifications of the standard “MBN 55555-8 Non-metallic materials, material systems and semi-finished products - Part 8: Analytical tests / Low temperature behaviour of elastomers - Cold reference value” must be observed.

The Mercedes-Benz DBL 1000 standard is a comprehensive specification developed to regulate the quality of materials and components used in vehicle interiors. It replaces the previous DBL 5430 standard. It contains stringent requirements, test methods, and limit values for emissions and odors from materials and components that come into direct or indirect contact with the vehicle's interior cabin air. This standard is critical to ensuring occupant health, comfort, and safety while maintaining high quality standards.

The DBL 1000 standard applies to all components, parts, and materials that can affect the air quality in a vehicle's passenger compartment. This includes components located directly in the interior, such as seats, dashboards, and upholstery, as well as components that may indirectly affect cabin air through ventilation systems, air conditioning, heating units, or body openings, such as luggage compartments and seals. The primary goal is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for vehicle occupants by minimizing harmful emissions and unpleasant odors.

This standard addresses:

  • Electromagnetic emissions: Limiting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and other hazardous substances that can evaporate from materials.
  • Odor control: Ensuring that materials do not produce offensive odors that could negatively impact the driving experience.
  • Material safety: Verifying that materials meet rigorous health and environmental standards.

The DBL 1000 standard includes various standard test methods for evaluating the emission and odor properties of materials. These tests are conducted by accredited laboratories to ensure compliance with the stringent requirements of the Mercedes-Benz Group. The main test methods are:

  • VDA 270: Determines the odor characteristics of trim materials in motor vehicles and evaluates whether the odors are acceptable for interior use.
  • VDA 275: Measures formaldehyde emissions, a critical factor in health and safety due to the potential toxicity of formaldehyde.
  • VDA 278: Uses thermal desorption analysis to characterize organic emissions from non-metallic materials and determines the presence and amount of VOCs and SVOCs at specific temperatures (e.g. 120 degrees).
  • DIN ISO 12219-4: Evaluates VOC emissions from vehicle interior parts using the small chamber method.
  • DIN ISO 12219-6: Evaluates SVOC emissions at elevated temperatures using the small chamber method.
  • DIN ISO 12219-7: Measures odor in cabin air and test room air through odor assessments.
  • VDA 276-3: Determines the concentration of total hydrocarbon compounds in test chambers and vehicle interiors using a flame ionization detector.
  • DIN 75201: Evaluates fogging behavior by measuring the condensation of volatile substances on surfaces (e.g. windshields).
  • DIN EN 13130-4: Contains tests for 1,3-butadiene, a potentially hazardous compound in plastics.
  • DIN EN ISO 17226-1: Determines the formaldehyde content in leather materials.

These methods ensure that materials meet strict limits for emissions and odor, protecting both vehicle occupants and the environment.

Mercedes-Benz Group suppliers worldwide must comply with the DBL 1000 standard to obtain approval for their materials and components. Accredited laboratories are authorized to perform these tests. These laboratories use advanced equipment such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyze emissions and ensure compliance with the standard's requirements.

The testing process typically includes:

  • Thermal desorption: Heating materials to release and analyze volatile compounds.
  • Small chamber testing: Simulating real-world conditions to measure emissions in controlled environments.
  • Odor evaluations: Evaluation of odors to ensure they meet acceptable thresholds for vehicle interiors.

Suppliers must submit test reports demonstrating compliance, which are then reviewed by the Mercedes-Benz Group to approve the materials used in production vehicles.

The DBL 1000 standard underscores the Mercedes-Benz Group's commitment to quality, safety, and environmental responsibility. By imposing strict limits on emissions and odors, the standard helps reduce the presence of harmful substances in vehicle interiors, improving occupant health and comfort. It also aligns with global trends toward sustainability, as automakers increasingly prioritize environmentally friendly materials and reduced environmental impact.

Consequently, the Mercedes-Benz DBL 1000 standard is a cornerstone of the company's approach to vehicle interior quality. By setting strict requirements for emissions and odors, it ensures that the materials used in vehicles are safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
