Honeywell QCI-9310-346 Control Instructions for PV EVO Cartridge Assemblies

Honeywell is a publicly traded, multinational American conglomerate corporation. Conglomerates are masses formed by the consolidation of sand and gravel under pressure and hardening over time. Honeywell operates in four primary business areas: aerospace, building automation, performance materials and technologies, and safety and productivity solutions. The company's standard, "Honeywell QCI-9310-346 PV EVO Cartridge Assemblies Control Instructions", describes the instructions that apply to all GTC series VNT EVO cartridge assemblies manufactured in Honeywell Turbo Technologies shops or supplier facilities. The content of this standard does not apply to commercial vehicle products, wastegate turbochargers, or GTA, GTB series other passenger vehicle variable nozzle turbine turbochargers.

Honeywell QCI-9310-346 Control Instructions for PV EVO Cartridge Assemblies

This standard is a specification applicable to all EVO cartridge assemblies (3-piece inserts) used in GTC series Honeywell passenger vehicle variable nozzle turbine turbochargers. This specification includes quality acceptance criteria for riveted connections between tube and spacers, spacers and nozzle ring, and blade clearance control.

The standard includes diagrams of an EVO cartridge and nozzle ring spacer joint (orbital riveting).

The riveting process required for all passenger vehicle variable nozzle turbine subassemblies conforming to this standard is orbital riveting only (e.g. 500 DaN is required for orbital riveting, while 800-1000 DaN is required for flat pressing) in order to limit the load required to fill the nozzle chamfer with spacer tip material.

The picture in the standard shows an example of a spacer tip that is orbitally riveted in the nozzle bevel. The riveted area must be free of cracks and in contact with the nozzle bevel. In order to analyse the sections qualitatively, they must be prepared in accordance with the standard annex (Annex 1).

The mechanical resistance criteria in the standard are explained as follows:

  • Monotonic pull criterion: Riveted joints complying with this standard must meet the following mechanical criterion: All joints of the cartridge (riveted) must resist a pull of 4000 N x 4000 N applied to the nozzle and pipe as shown in the figure. In other words, the failure of any joint of the cartridge must occur at a pull force greater than XNUMX N x XNUMX N x XNUMX N.
  • Low cycle fatigue criterion: A fatigue test on cold equipment has been developed to simulate the deformations of the cartridge under thermal cycling by means of thermal shock tests. The fatigue resistance of riveted joints complying with this standard shall be examined under all conditions in the specified batch size and shall meet the following fatigue criterion in addition to the pull-out criterion: When a cyclic load of 5000 N is applied to the fin face of the tube while supporting the nozzle ring at the flange contact surface, at a frequency of less than 50 Hz (adjusted depending on the equipment capacity), any failure of the cartridge shall occur in at least 400.000 cycles.
  • Control frequency: The control procedures and criteria described above should be applied in the following cases:
    • Every time a PPAP is run for any normal situation that would justify a PPAP (new assembly weld, new weld for any of the individual components, new tooling, tool modification, and similar) (this should be performed on 10 assemblies for fatigue testing)
    • After any major maintenance of production tools or any new installation of production processes at single component level (nozzle ring, pipe, spacers or assembly level) (this should be performed on 2 assemblies for fatigue testing.

In addition to these specified conditions, the minimum inspection rate is twice a year. This should be carried out on 1 assembly for fatigue testing.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has provided for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “Honeywell QCI-9310-346 PV EVO Cartridge Assemblies Control Instructions” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
