Hyundai Kia MS 655-08 Paint - Hard Thermoplastic Parts

Hyundai Kia MS 655-08 Paint - Hard Thermoplastic Parts

The “Hyundai Kia MS 655-08 Paint - Rigid thermoplastic parts” standard developed by Hyundai Motor Company describes the requirements for determining the performance and quality of paint for rigid thermoplastic parts.

Hyundai Kia MS 655-08 Paint - Hard Thermoplastic Parts

This standard is generally used for the application described in the table given in the standard or specified on the engineering drawing.

The general requirements in this standard are described as follows:

  • The coating product parts must comply with all requirements of the relevant coating performance specification. The paint composition and processing conditions that may affect the quality of the parts must not be changed inappropriately. Consultation with the polymeric material department research team is mandatory before changing the chemical composition of the paint.
  • If an additional printing process such as screen printing or pad printing is applied to the surface of painted parts, the printed part must be dried for 80 hour at 1 degrees or in conditions suitable for equivalent printing properties.
  • The color tone should be within the range of the color combination chart published by the company's Style Department or the standard samples within the agreement between the parties.
  • It shall be free from cracks, peeling, discoloration or other defects in the vibration test specified in the drawing or in the material specifications of MS210-05 or MS210-06 plastic products. The test shall be performed only if specified in the drawing.
  • The coating thickness shall be as in the table given in the standard. In the case of the outer door handle indicated by the symbol “M-1” in the drawing, the coating thickness shall be met according to the conditions of “general painting face” and “parting line area” in the tables respectively. When the coating thickness needs to be adjusted due to shape limitation, hidden structure and leveling and similar reasons, the required thickness shall be determined by consultation with the relevant teams. The case of parts with different coating composition, including the key button (backlight type), shall be discussed. The primer thickness regulation in the table shall be applied only when the primer is applied. It shall be discussed when a special primer (for electrical conductivity) is used. It shall be discussed when the primer is used for color regulation.
  • Unless otherwise specified, the test sequence should be as per the table given in the standard and if failure occurs at any single step, the test should be stopped and the coating properties should be improved. The test sequence should be as follows:
    • Step 1: Gradual appearance, gloss, pencil hardness, scratch resistance, adhesion, impact resistance, printing
    • Step 2: Acid resistance, alkali resistance, chemical resistance, sunscreen lotion resistance, PVC plasticizer resistance, heat cycling resistance, chip resistance
    • Step 3: Gradual moisture resistance, water resistance, salt spray resistance, heat resistance, abrasion resistance
    • Step 4: Fade resistance, weather resistance, antibacterial performance

This standard also contains detailed requirements. Materials are tested by the methods specified in this standard and are found to conform to the conditions specified in the table.

The test methods presented in the standard include:

  • The standard condition of the laboratory is 23 degrees plus/minus 2 degrees temperature and 50 percent plus/minus 5 percent relative humidity.
  • The test sample is cut from the final product and the area cut from the product is reported. However, if this is not possible, the sample is made by the same process as the final product. All tests are performed on samples that have been kept in the standard condition for a minimum conditioning period of 72 hours. Five samples are tested for each test item and the arithmetic mean is reported.
  • The appearance should comply with the standard “Hyundai Kia MS 600-35 Test methods for coatings and coating films”.
  • The gloss shall be in accordance with the standard “ISO 2813 Paints and varnishes - Determination of gloss value at 20 degrees, 60 degrees and 85 degrees” or the standard “JIS K 5600-4-7 Test methods for paints - Part 4: Visual properties of film - Part 7: Specular gloss” and the gloss shall be measured at 60 degrees. If the parts contain grain, the gloss of both the grained surface and the grain-free surface shall be reported.
  • Pencil hardness should be in accordance with the standard “ISO 15184 Paints and varnishes - Determination of film hardness by pencil test” or the standard “JIS K 5600-5-4 Test methods for paints - Part 5: Mechanical properties of film - Part 4: Scratch hardness (pencil method)”.
  • Scratch resistance is confirmed according to the standard “JIS K 6718-1 Plastics - Poly(methyl methacrylate) sheets - Types, dimensions and properties”.
