Luster is a property of the material surface. The surface gloss of a material refers to the ability of the material surface to reflect light specularly. It is a relative measure of the ability of a material's specular surface to reflect light under a given set of geometric angle conditions. If the material surface is smooth enough, when a parallel beam of light illuminates the plane mirror, it will still be reflected parallel in one direction. This reflection method is called specular reflection. In real life, the surfaces of metal, porcelain and mirrors are very smooth. Their ability to reflect light to the mirror surface is strong.

Among the gloss measurement methods, a commonly used method is its detection with a gloss meter. In the BMW AA-0101 standard, developed by BMW, a multinational vehicle manufacturer company headquartered in Germany, a test method for determining the reflectometer value is described. The gloss meter used in this test method is called specular gloss meter. It consists of incoming light transmitter, receiver, standard card and other structures. The measured gloss is based on black glass with a refractive index of np = 1.567. Assuming the plane is ideally polished, the plane is used for natural light beams.
It is a dimensionless measurement value of the gloss value based on a standard board that is exactly the material surface when illuminated by light. In other words, it is the ratio of the reflectivity of light to the reflection of a standard surface. The surface gloss value of a material is usually expressed by the English gloss unit GU. The luminance unit can be a ratio or a number.
Generally, under the same measurement conditions, the higher the brightness value, the brighter the surface. However, brightness values measured under different angles may be biased. Therefore, brightness values should only be compared with each other under the same conditions using the same gloss meter. If the measuring instruments and measurement angles are not the same, comparing the measured brightness values will not be accurate. In this respect, when a user needs to perceive the brightness of a product, they should choose the same gloss meter and measure from a specific angle.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides reflectometer value determination (brightness) testing services within the scope of BMW AA-0101 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
