Mercedes-Benz MBN 10494-5 Paint Test Methods - Part 5: Technical-Mechanical Tests
According to the standard “Mercedes-Benz MBN 10494-5 Paint test methods - Part 5: Technical-mechanical tests” developed by the Mercedes-Benz group, to test a paint or coating material or similar substance and a painted or coated part, at least two supply specifications are basically required:

- This MBN 10494 standard with test methods for approval
- Special supply specification with the relevant paint or coating material and the requirements to be met for the painted or coated part
The requirements in this standard are described as follows:
- To ensure product safety and product quality and to meet standard requirements, all relevant legal regulations must be complied with. In addition, the relevant requirements of the Daimler Group apply.
- All materials, process engineering, component parts and systems must comply with all applicable legal requirements regarding components and recyclability.
- For relevant information on substance prohibitions and declaration obligations, standards DBL 8585 and DBL 6714 apply.
- With all coating materials, care must be taken to ensure the lowest possible odor and the lowest possible volatile substance content (e.g. solvents, plasticizers).
- Preparations and coating materials must be marked in accordance with legal regulations and the necessary information for transport and use must be provided. In case of use abroad, the regulations and rules applicable to these countries must be taken into account.
Technical-mechanical tests must be carried out on coated samples or coated component parts according to the MBN 10494-1 standard. The paint structure, coating thickness and drying conditions of the paints to be tested, including the repair paint structure, are specified in the material-specific standard.
Adhesion tests include:
- Manual scratch test: In these tests, a special cable stripper, the shape of which is given in the standard, is used. The back of the blade must be at least 2,5 mm thick. Alternative blades must have a slightly curved cutting edge (relatively small contact point during scratching) and a fixed blade back (at least 2,5 mm) to ensure that the blade does not bend during the test. The blade must be checked regularly for sharpness and sharpened or replaced if necessary. Accordingly, cutting blades/carpet knives or flexible-bladed pocket knives are not suitable. The blade side of the special cable stripper must be used to scrape the coating down to the substrate by pulling the blade while pressure is applied. To test the bond between several layers, the pressure must be reduced accordingly. The assessment given in the standard applies to the critical area in the bond (multi-layer finishes) or to single-layer finishes in the general paint structure.
- Adhesion test by tape tear-off on cathodic electrocoating: This test is applied in the case of cathodic electrocoatings and cathodic electrocoated weld seams. In the case of a multi-layer paint, this test is performed before the application of additional coatings. During the test, the adhesive tape is pressed down without bubbles and then suddenly pulled upwards at a right angle to the sample surface. It is then visually assessed whether paint delamination is visible.
The methods applied in multiple impact stone crushing testing include:
- Multiple impact test, method B: Based on method B of the DIN EN ISO 20567-1 standard.
- Multiple impact test, method C: Based on method C of the DIN EN ISO 20567-1 standard.
- Multiple impact stone breaking test of the top coating structure on the seam sealant after cathodic electroplating: performed according to DBL 6070 standard.
- Pressurized water jet testing: Based on DIN EN ISO 16925 standard.
- Cross cut: Based on DIN EN ISO 2409 standard.
- Cupping test: Based on DIN EN ISO 1520 standard.
- Mandrel bending test with cylindrical mandrel: Procedure and evaluation based on the DIN EN ISO 1519 standard.
- Pendulum damping test (hardness according to König): Based on standard DIN EN ISO 1522.
- Scratch resistance test:
- Car wash scratch resistance (Amtec Kistler test): Based on DIN EN ISO 20566 standard.
- Erasable scratch resistance (Crockmeter test)
