BMW AA-0053 Sunscreen Resistance of Painted Surfaces

It has always been important to protect cars from the harmful effects of the sun and heat. Sun and heat do a lot of damage to a car. During research, indoor temperatures sometimes rise well above 60 degrees. On interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight, the temperature approaches 100 degrees. But it's not just the dashboard and seats that need protection from the sun's dangerous rays. A car's finish and engine are also at risk.

Developed by BMW, a multinational vehicle manufacturer company headquartered in Germany, the BMW AA-0053 standard defines a test method for determining the resistance of painted parts in the interior of vehicles to sunscreen.

There are two components that cause sunscreen stains on car paint: polyethylene glycol and titanium dioxide. These compounds are designed to protect people from light and the sun's harmful rays (ultraviolet rays). But when left on a vehicle, they leave an oily white residue that damages the paintwork. Most sunscreens today are water resistant. This means that the sunscreen will stay on the car even after extensive contact washes. Sunscreen is made to absorb whatever is applied. When someone touches the car, it transfers the sunscreen and the cream begins to absorb the paint or painted parts of the interior. Generally, the quicker action is taken, the easier it is to remove sunscreen stains. Acting quickly increases the likelihood of removing the handprint entirely.

However, if the sunscreen on the car paint is not new, if the sunscreen has been adhered to the panel long enough, it will begin to absorb the paint. Sunscreen makes the paint a little sticky and makes the handprint very noticeable. In this case, it is necessary to use a more abrasive method to clean the sunscreen.

People interact with the seats, and the interior upholstery is bound to come into contact with sunscreen at some point. For this reason, the sunscreen resistance of the painted parts in the interior is at least as important as the exterior paint.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services to determine the resistance of painted surfaces to sunscreen, within the scope of BMW AA-0053 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
